Two successful debuts show that the Avinox motor from China is set to become an indispensable feature of touring bikes too. With its smooth yet powerful response, the DJI motor sets new benchmarks, particularly when it comes to smart features such as GPS tracking and touchscreens. The range of models available for trekking and everyday bikes does need to expand a little further, but we are confident that this will happen. - Adrian Kaether, Test & Technology Editor
Do you really need that much power on an e-bike? Even for us in the test department, it’s hard to believe just how fast the spiral of innovation is currently spinning in China. It was only in 2024 that DJI unveiled its debut motor, the Avinox M1, at Eurobike. The Chinese company thus outperformed the tried-and-tested Bosch CX by almost double in terms of power, and experts were unanimous: this could only be an empty promise.
But DJI has delivered and is now striking fear into the e-bike world. The motor doesn’t overheat, even on long climbs, and its power delivery and riding feel are on a par with the best competitors right from the start. Earlier this year, DJI unveiled the successor to its first motor, the M1. The M2S even delivers 150 rather than 120 Newton metres, has a peak power output of 1,500 rather than 1,000 watts, and offers an even smoother and more refined ride.
Nevertheless, the question naturally remains: what use is such high power on a bike anyway? With a mountain bike, the answer is a little clearer. The steepest gravel ramps or very challenging climbs are easier to tackle with more momentum. Especially as the power of the Avinox motors can also be modulated very effectively.
On a touring bike, however, you’ll hit the 25 km/h mark in no time at all. Long climbs that are so steep that you from a top-of-the-range motor such as the Bosch CX (reviewed here) Those who would want even more power are the absolute exception. Nevertheless, there are good reasons to opt for the Avinox motor even on bikes for everyday use and cycle touring. Like no other motor manufacturer, the Chinese have demonstrated just how quickly they can take customer requests seriously and put them into practice. A good app was available right from the start. A fast charger delivering a whopping 12 amps charges three times (!) as fast as a standard e-bike charger.
So, if you want to, you can easily recharge a completely flat battery back up to 80 per cent during a long lunch break. This can significantly extend your range whilst on the move. There is one caveat, however: the fast charger is often an optional extra. This also applies to our two test models. But Avinox has also turned other requests – such as a customisable order of assistance modes or additional features in the app, like on-screen navigation – into reality in just a few months. USB-C charging and a GPS tracking function for theft protection are also included.
It is even possible to set a maximum heart rate for the rider when the motor is paired with a heart rate monitor. If the heart rate approaches the set threshold, the motor utilises its superior power to bring the heart rate back below the limit. For people who, for health reasons, must not exceed a certain level of exertion, this can be a compelling argument. The feature has just won an award at Eurobike.
The optional GPS tracking is handy for commuting and everyday use. To use it, you simply insert a SIM card of your choice into the display, thereby connecting the motor system to the mobile network. If desired, the bike then sends location data to your smartphone, allowing it to be pinpointed in the event of theft. Such features are also available on other bikes. However, they are often manufacturer-specific and only available in combination with a fixed subscription, or with some limitations via Apple’s ‘Find My’ feature. One minor limitation: to use the tracking feature, you need the high-quality DPC 100 display. However, almost all manufacturers who have so far showcased bikes with Avinox fit this display as standard.
The M2S is the new flagship motor from DJI’s subsidiary Avinox. Its phenomenal peak performance is complemented by its light weight and a host of smart features within an ecosystem that is already a great success. Alongside the M2S, there is also the slightly more affordable M2 and the older M1, both of which also deliver 120 Nm and over 1,000 watts of peak power, with a comparable range of features.
Despite all the justified scepticism regarding the next arms race in terms of performance, it is precisely features such as tracking without a fixed subscription, fast charging and motor control via heart rate that demonstrate the innovative strength of Chinese motor manufacturers. For a specific target group, they can make a decisive difference.
In other respects, the Avinox remains a typical mid-drive motor and is unable to overcome some of the weaknesses inherent in this design. Avinox’s motors are quiet but not inaudible whilst riding; the pedalling resistance without assistance was, at least on the first Avinox M1, slightly higher than on Bosch’s CX, and the choice of displays is still somewhat limited.
Anyone who pushes the system to its full potential must also expect increased wear and tear on the drivetrain components. Traditional derailleurs, in particular, wear out much more quickly even on standard e-bikes with lower power output. The biggest problem with touring bikes fitted with Avinox, however, is the limited choice of models.
Alongside Steppenwolf and Velo de Ville, which feature permanently fitted batteries, the Czech brand Crussis in particular will still have bikes suitable for everyday use with Avinox motors in its range from the 2027 model year onwards, by which time they will also be available with removable batteries. And with its own brand, Amflow, Avinox has also entered the bicycle market itself. Until now, only mountain bikes were available, but since summer 2026, the range has also included a full-suspension SUV bike with a carbon frame, luggage rack and mudguards.. The incredible price of just 3,499 euros for this high-end bike, featuring Fox suspension and electronic gear changes, is likely to have the competition breaking out in a cold sweat already.
Our two test bikes from Velo de Ville and Steppenwolf are still significantly more expensive by comparison. However, they impressively demonstrate the potential that Avinox motors have in the trekking segment too. Slim, powerful and relatively light, they appeal primarily to a sporty target audience. Steppenwolf presents itself as more versatile, whilst Velo de Ville has a sportier focus. Both are attractive bikes, but their design must also suit the rider and the intended use. The permanently fitted battery in particular is likely to put off some potential buyers, no matter how responsive, intelligent and powerful an Avinox motor may be.
The Steppenwolf Transterra Sport impresses across the board. It’s a versatile and comfortable touring bike that also scores points for its low-maintenance belt drive. Whilst Steppenwolf could still make some minor improvements, the relaunched brand’s debut has been a success. However, the permanently fitted battery and the limited choice of just two frame sizes will need to suit the target audience. - Adrian Kaether, Test & Technology Editor
The Velo de Ville is a zippy and sporty e-bike for short everyday journeys. The powerful Avinox system, its light weight and the ability to customise it using a modular design are clear advantages.
