A generalist e-bike such as the new Orbea Muga has to fulfil very high demands. The bike should be able to perform convincingly from commuting on the road to off-road excursions and carry all kinds of accessories. When trying to integrate a rear suspension, electric motor, lighting system, pannier rack, mudguard, bottle cage and kickstand into the concept, the look often falls by the wayside. Orbea did not want to make this compromise. Despite being fully equipped with accessories, the new Muga should look like a single piece.
In the bottom bracket area, the Orbea Muga is powered by the latest Bosch CX motor. If you want to save weight, you can opt for the 600 watt-hour battery, and with the 750 watt-hour model and an optional 250 watt-hour range extender, longer adventures are also possible. The energy sources are permanently installed in the frame, which makes theft more difficult and reduces the overall weight. Orbea claims that the Muga is one of the lightest bikes in its class.
In terms of geometry and suspension, the developers were inspired by the Spanish brand's mountain bikes. 120 millimetres of travel on the fork and 115 millimetres on the shock provide additional reserves when the trail gets bumpy. Orbea hides the shock absorber in a cross strut with a cover, where it is protected from dirt but still remains accessible. For efficient propulsion, the Fox air shock specially tuned for the Muga can be locked from the handlebars while riding. For even more safety on descents, a dropper post moves the saddle out of the way
Anyone expecting the Orbea Muga to be heavy due to the flood of accessories is in for a surprise. The bike comes with a 29-inch front wheel and a 27.5-inch rear wheel to make the handling responsive and manoeuvrable. The attachments can be quickly removed if necessary using the Quick Fix system. The rear pannier rack attached to the frame can carry loads of up to 30 kilos. An optional front carrier can carry up to 10 kilos. Additional attachment points can accommodate a lock or up to two bottle holders, for example.
A powerful Supernova headlight is integrated into the design cockpit. It cannot be stolen and does not conflict with panniers. The rear light has a brake light function and becomes brighter when decelerating to prevent rear-end collisions. For even more safety, the Orbea Muga is compatible with all kinds of Bluetooth trackers. The bike can be locked and unlocked via smartphone using the Bosch Flow app.
Orbea offers the Muga in three equipment variants with carbon frames. All come fully equipped, including bicycle light, pannier rack, mudguards, kickstand and even a dropper post. Thanks to Schwalbe tyres with reflective sidewalls, all models are fully STVO-compliant. While the 30 and 20 models are equipped with derailleur gears, the top model with the code number 10 relies on a belt drive in combination with an Enviolo automatic gear hub for minimal maintenance.
