Lightweight city e-bike Merida eSpeeder on test
Light, stylish and fast - a recipe that makes city e-bikes irresistible. Does Merida's eSpeeder 400 EQ have the right ingredients?

Sometimes the art is in the omission. Pedelecs for short, brisk rides in urban environments do not need large, heavy batteries or powerful motors. Lightweight e-bikes get up to speed almost as quickly with significantly less power as heavy touring bikes with high-power drives trimmed for range and comfort. Lightweight e-bikes are more agile and can be carried into the bike cellar without the need for regular weight training. Small hub motors and batteries make pedelecs not only easier to handle, but also cheaper. And because the slim energy sources fit into filigree frame tubes, you can hardly tell the bikes have an e-bike drive.

Under 16 kilos! How the Merida eSpeeder saves weight

The Merida eSpeeder 400 EQ is a typical representative of this class. Its very slim 250 Wh battery fits into the only moderately voluminous down tube, and its mini hub motor could also pass for a geared hub. At 15.7 kilos, the eSpeeder is almost extremely light for an e-bike. It's not just the drive components that are light: in order to give the frame as much stability as possible despite its lightweight construction, the aluminium frame tubes have different diameters and are up to triple butted. The frame is brilliantly finished, with smooth-welded seams that are pleasing to the eye. As far as possible, all cables and wires run from the stem to the chainstays in the frame tubes. There is also a full carbon fork with a tapered steerer tube and thru-axle, which further reinforces the frame assembly.

The rest of the equipment also helps to keep the weight of the eSpeeder low. This includes a small but bright Lezyne lighting system and a lightweight pannier rack. The wheels with 40 millimetre wide tyres are a good compromise between acceptable comfort on the one hand and weight saving on the other. The brakes and Deore rear derailleur come from Shimano's mid-range range. The gear range of the ten-speed drivetrain is easily sufficient for use in a predominantly urban environment. Mudguards with plastic splash guard extensions protect your feet from dirt and moisture.

However, one weight-saving measure is immediately noticeable on the road: the bike has no suspension elements. Despite the moderately sporty riding position, the eSpeeder is therefore not very comfortable. Even the long carbon seat post and the voluminous tyres for this bike class do little to change this. Although the straight handlebar emphasises the sporty appearance and ensures good control and precise steering behaviour, it doesn't improve the riding comfort either. Despite the slightly rear-heavy weight distribution, the Merida rolls very agilely and safely.

Small but powerful: the Mahle X35 hub motor impresses with its power delivery

The good bike characteristics are complemented by the right motor. The Mahle X35 hub motor impresses with its predictable power delivery. It reacts sensitively and promptly to pedal pressure and only switches off with a slight delay when you stop pedalling. Although - or perhaps because - it is not one of the most powerful in its class, it is a perfect match for the lively Merida, which ultimately wants to be ridden in a sporty manner. A simple push button on the top tube serves as a minimalist control instrument. It brings the drive to life and changes the support levels. It lights up in different colours depending on the battery charge level and assistance level. A smartphone app expands the operating options.

Disadvantage of the drive system: The battery cannot be removed from the frame without tools. Below around five degrees Celsius, the bike should therefore be parked in a warm place to charge the energy source.

Test summary of the Merida eSpeeder 400

The Merida eSpeeder 400 is a stylishly minimalist city e-bike for sporty riders. It has an exemplary finish, is lightweight and is based on the look of non-motorised bikes.

The price of the Merida e-bike is 2,749 euros.
