Hercules Jarvis 5 review: A full-suspension e-bike for everyday use

​Conclusion: Full suspension, versatile, suitable for everyday use

The Hercules Jarvis 5 is a full-suspension trekking e-bike designed specifically for comfort and everyday use. The combination of a Suntour air suspension fork and rear shock with lockout makes it a true all-rounder, performing equally well on bumpy country lanes and on cobbled city streets. The belt drive, in-hub gear system and large battery clearly appeal to commuters and touring cyclists.

The price of 4,999 euros is ambitious given what’s on offer, but is certainly in line with market rates in the full-suspension e-bike segment featuring a Bosch motor and premium spec. Anyone looking for a comfortable, low-maintenance and well-equipped e-bike for varied terrain should put the Jarvis 5 on their test ride list.

​Frame & Full Suspension: The heart of the Jarvis 5

The Jarvis 5’s aluminium frame is derived from the company’s own eMTB R30 series. This suggests a design that has its roots in the MTB sector – not a bad foundation for a trekking e-bike, as the geometry is designed for stability and an upright riding position. The model is available exclusively in the Wave version (low step-through), which makes it more accessible to a wide range of riders. Four frame sizes – 42, 44, 47 and 50 – cater for a wide range of rider heights.

However, the Jarvis 5’s real unique selling point in the trekking segment is its full suspension. At the front, there is a Suntour air suspension fork with 130 mm of travel and a lockout system. The air suspension allows for easy adjustment to the rider’s weight, whilst the lockout makes the fork firm and efficient on smooth tarmac.

​130 mm of front suspension travel sounds like a lot – in everyday trekking use, you’ll rarely use the full range of travel. However, anyone who frequently rides on rough terrain will appreciate having that extra reserve.

At the rear, a Suntour Edge Evo provides suspension – also an air spring, also with a lockout. This is a welcome level of consistency: if you can fine-tune both suspension components individually via air pressure and lockout, you’ll have a bike that can adapt flexibly to a wide variety of surfaces – from cobbled city streets to country lanes. For daily commuting on uneven routes or for longer rides off the beaten track, this combination offers a real boost in comfort.

​Motor & battery: Bosch power with a long range

For the drive system, Hercules has opted for the Bosch Performance motor with a maximum torque of 75 Nm. Whilst this isn’t a top-of-the-range motor from the current Bosch generation, it delivers reliable and smooth assistance – particularly at moderate speeds on long rides. It is paired with a 720 Wh Bosch PowerTube battery, which is integrated into the frame and therefore well protected. The display is the Bosch Purion 200 – compact, clear, but functionally limited to the essentials. Anyone wishing for a more comprehensive range of information will have to rely on their smartphone.

​Drive system: a belt instead of a chain – a statement of comfort

One of the most striking features of the Jarvis 5 is the Gates Carbon Drive CDC belt drive. Combined with the Shimano NEXUS 5-speed in-hub gearbox, this results in a virtually maintenance-free drivetrain. No oiling, no chain cleaning, no rust problems – a compelling argument, particularly for everyday cyclists and commuters.

The compromise: Five gears are generally sufficient for an e-bike with a 75 Nm motor, but anyone planning sporty mountain rides might wish for a wider range.

​Brakes & Wheels: Staying safe on the road

The Shimano BR-MT420 hydraulic disc brakes, each with 203 mm discs at the front and rear, are a good choice for a bike in this weight category.

The 29-inch wheels, combined with Schwalbe Marathon Mondial (57-622) tyres, are designed for long-distance riding and comfort. The Marathon Mondial is regarded as one of the most puncture-resistant touring tyres on the market – a fitting finishing touch to this design.

​Cockpit & Features: Thoughtfully designed for everyday use

The adjustable Ahead stem and aluminium riser handlebars allow for an upright, ergonomic riding position. The Limotec seatpost offers flexibility in seat height with an adjustment range of 100 to 150 mm.

The Jarvis 5 is also perfectly equipped for everyday use when it comes to accessories: the Racktime Snapit 2.0 system luggage rack, Curana Orbit 80 aluminium mudguards, an integrated Abus IT4 battery lock with X-Plus cylinder, a Hercules FS-102 EB headlight with up to 100 lux, as well as a rear light and side stand from Pletscher round off the package. The front rack interface also allows for the addition of a compatible front luggage rack.
