When it comes to electric cars, many people are already used to driving using just the accelerator pedal. This smooth, continuous motion without abrupt braking really comes into its own, particularly in flowing traffic. Apart from a few minor details, we were surprised at how far Hepha has already come with implementing this technology on e-bikes too. This is supposed to be it: the first, genuine e-bike. So Hepha is really going all out with its marketing. But there’s a grain of truth to it. The Urban X is said to have been designed specifically as an e-bike and to be more than just a conventional bicycle with a motor. Hepha, based in Maisach near Munich is closely linked to the Chinese engine manufacturer Gobao has combined these elements and taken the electric car as its model for its most ambitious project.
The idea: Just like an electric car, the Urban X accelerates when you press the accelerator or pedal. New: When you take your foot off the accelerator – in other words, when the pedals are at a standstill – the bike brakes automatically. Just like engine braking, or the energy recovery system in an electric car, which served as the inspiration for the idea. If you press the pedals backwards, the braking is even more pronounced. By accelerating and braking using only the pedals, you’re meant to glide through city traffic in complete relaxation, without ever having to use the brake lever.
This concept is also possible thanks to the special engine in the Urban X. That’s because A new type of eCVT drive system from Gobao is already in use. This means that, in theory, true regenerative braking is even possible, and there’s no need for a separate gear system at all. Thanks to a one-size-fits-all frame with a seat that allows you to slide forwards or backwards, the bike is designed to suit riders of all heights, albeit primarily for short journeys. A super-fast charger is housed in the black box beneath the seat. The price of this smart bike is expected to be under 3,000 euros. However, the Hepha will probably not be available to buy until 2028.
Incidentally, we’ve already had a go on the Hepha Urban X. Despite still being a concept, riding without brakes is impressive and you get the hang of it surprisingly quickly. The bike accelerates readily when you pedal. If you stop pedalling, the bike slows down gently – or a little more sharply if you pedal backwards. This actually allows you to stop right at traffic lines, such as at a red light.
There are still a few areas that need work, though. At the moment, the bike only slows down to walking pace – probably for safety reasons. For the concept of brake-free riding to really work, the bike would also need to slow down to a complete stop. Other minor issues, such as the strength of the regenerative braking or unnecessary braking when you can’t pedal in bends due to the bike’s lean angle, still need to be addressed. Last but not least, the one-size-fits-all design still needs to prove its worth. The seat is merely a mediocre compromise and works best for people around 1.70 metres tall. Anyone significantly shorter or much taller would certainly prefer their own frame size. However, the idea of autonomous braking clearly shows great potential.
