The Dutch bicycle manufacturer Gazelle is expanding its e-bike range with the new Avignon series, which is characterised by premium comfort and a striking design. The model range comprises three variants - the C380+, the C380 and the C5 - which differ in terms of drive and equipment, but all have one thing in common. easy-care belt drive set. The two top models are equipped with the powerful Bosch Performance Line PX mid-motor which is designed to provide powerful and even support when pedalling.
When developing the Avignon models, Gazelle claims to have placed particular emphasis on harmonious design. The frame has flowing lines from front to back, while cables and lighting have been fully integrated to create a tidy overall impression. The geometry follows the typical Dutch bicycle philosophy with an upright seating position and a low, wide entry, which should increase comfort and enable relaxed use.
A key feature of all Avignon models is the Gates belt drive, which offers several advantages over a conventional chain. The belt requires no lubrication and, according to the manufacturer, has a three to five times longer service life. It also works almost silently, which should contribute to a quieter and more pleasant riding experience. This low maintenance makes the Avignon models particularly suitable for everyday use, as there is no need for time-consuming cleaning work or regular oiling.
The Avignon series scores points with its extensive comfort features. These include an integrated brake light as standard for increased safety, extra-wide tyres for more riding comfort and leather grips for a pleasant contact point. Gazelle has also developed its own suspension fork especially for this model series, which, in combination with the gel saddle, is designed to effectively absorb shocks.
For the operation and control of the e-bike a generously dimensioned Kiox 500 colour display positioned in the centre of the handlebars, which ensures good readability of the riding data. The display can be connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth, providing additional functions such as navigation. It is controlled via switches on the handlebars to ensure safe operation while riding. Buyers can choose between three different battery capacities: 540, 600 and 800 watt hours, which enable different ranges depending on the riding style and terrain profile.
A remarkable security feature of the Avignon series is the integrated GPS tracking system called Gazelle Protect. This tracker enables remote monitoring of the bike and sends a notification to the Gazelle app on the owner's smartphone in the event of unauthorised movement or theft. To use this function, however, a separate data subscription with Gazelle is required, which must be taken out in addition to the purchase price of the e-bike.
The flagship of the Avignon series is the C380+ with a recommended retail price of €5,199. It is equipped with the new Bosch Performance Line PX mid-motor, which offers a torque of 85 Newton metres as standard. This value can even be increased to 90 Newton metres via the Bosch app. A special feature of this model is the Enviolo automatic shifting system, which makes manual gear selection superfluous. Users can set their preferred cadence via the display, whereupon the system automatically adjusts the gear ratio to maintain this cadence regardless of the incline or speed.
With a recommended retail price of €4,799, the Avignon C380 is positioned in the centre of the model range. It also has the Bosch Performance Line PX mid-motor with the option of increasing the torque to 90 Newton metres. In contrast to the top model, it is equipped with a continuously variable manual Enviolo gearstick. This allows the gear ratio to be adjusted flexibly by simply turning the gear lever - even while pedalling. The continuously variable technology theoretically offers an infinite number of gears, allowing precise adjustment to personal preferences and the respective riding situation.
With a recommended retail price of €4,399, the entry-level Avignon C5 is the most affordable model in the range and is primarily aimed at everyday riders. In contrast to the two higher-priced variants, it is equipped with the Bosch Performance Line mid-motor, which delivers a maximum torque of 75 Newton metres. For the gears, Gazelle relies on a Shimano Nexus 5-speed gear hub, which has been specially designed for the higher loads in e-bikes and should therefore have a longer service life than conventional gear hubs.
According to Gazelle, all three models in the Avignon series - C380+, C380 and C5 - are now available from specialist retailers. Interested parties also have the opportunity to test ride the e-bikes free of charge and without obligation at one of the numerous Gazelle e-bike test centres.
