The Canyon Precede:On AL 7 was presented for the first time in March 2022. MYBIKE took a close look at the city bike with e-drive and, of course, tested it extensively. Read the test results here.

Precede:On AL7 vs Precede:On CF 9

At first glance, the Canyon Precede:On AL 7 appears to be a doppelganger of the Precede:On CF 9. The silhouette and design are similar, but while the top version comes with plenty of carbon, our test bike is modest with light metal. The most significant difference between the two versions is the price: the aluminium version in our test is a whopping €1,300 cheaper than the :On CF, and the cheaper model is also around 3.3 kilos heavier.

Uli Frieß, test editor: "The Precede:On AL 7 is a sporty commuter and everyday pedelec. The fact that the frame is not made of carbon is hardly noticeable in terms of riding dynamics. The somewhat simpler equipment compared to the top model is nevertheless comfortable and suitable for everyday use."

Facts and figures

In some areas, the aluminium version is also somewhat more simply equipped. For example, the AL 7 "only" has Bosch's Performance drive instead of the more torquey Performance CX, and the Kiox display on the CF 9 offers a much wider range of functions than the Purion instrument on the AL 7. The continuously variable Enviolo gear hub works in both models, but in the carbon version it is electronically controlled, which enables various automatic functions. On the test bike, the gear ratio is changed manually using the twist grip.

A tensioning pulley ensures that the Gates belt is always correctly tensioned.

Seating position and ride feel

The Precede:On AL 7 is a compact, sporty bike. The seat length is comparatively short and the handlebar rise is moderate. This puts a lot of weight on your wrists, but ergonomic grips on the pleasantly cranked handlebars prevent any loss of comfort. Not least because of its 27.5-inch wheels, the Canyon rides lively and agile despite the 57 millimetre wide tyres. The frame composite with carbon fork and thru-axle in the front wheel is noticeably stiff and effectively converts the drive energy into propulsion. With a maximum torque of 65 Nm, Bosch's Performance Line motor allows for dynamic and fun-fuelled acceleration. The continuously variable Enviolo gear hub provides maximum riding comfort, while a Gates belt instead of a chain completes the smooth-running and low-maintenance drivetrain. We also liked the Supernova headlight with high beam function and the sturdy aluminium mudguards. So if you can live with around 3.3 kilograms more weight and a slightly less futuristic look, you'll save a lot of money with the aluminium version of the Precede:On. From a technical point of view, the aluminium model is not a deceptive package either.
