The Bergamont Hans-E is a new compact bike for the city that promises a lot of transport and space-saving potential. Our test shows how it utilises this potential.

The Bergamont Hans-E is unconventional: a kind of trapezoidal frame instead of an implied cross frame and a high-riser handlebar make for an unusual appearance. The frame is neatly finished and emphasises its own style with the black engine box.

Carriers at the front and rear create a real utility atmosphere, which is further emphasised by the many screw eyelets scattered everywhere. So there are plenty of transport options! However, the permissible system weight is only 130 kilograms. If you take the weight of the Bergamont Hans-E and the maximum load on the front pannier rack of 10 and back of 20 kilos, a good 70 kilos remained for your own person.

Even more compact practicality when tidying up: Hans-E can be parked on the luggage rack. Only then can the battery be removed from the down tube. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to secure it back into the tube. Fortunately, you can also charge it internally via an easily accessible socket on the top tube.

One size fits all also applies here, even if you sit upright and comfortably throughout. Suspension comfort can only be expected from the thick tyres, while the ergonomics on the handlebars are thoroughly convincing. The handling of the little one from St. Pauli: very safe riding feel, good directional stability, balanced cornering. The Bosch Perfomance Line responds finely and works dynamically, but doesn't harmonise very well with the derailleur: the gearbox clicks when the Tiagra changes sprocket.

We liked the steering stop integrated into the headset, but less the manoeuvring-unfriendly stand in the centre of the bike and the quick-release axle - a thru-axle would be more appropriate here. The Bergamont Hans-E also features a Speedlifter Twist for quick adjustment for all users and, together with the folding pedals, a slim frame silhouette. 3599 euros is a veritable offer for a largely well-rounded concept.

Conclusion on the Bergamont Hans-E compact e-bike

The Hans-E is a compact bike for the city with a lot of compact, transport and space-saving potential. We would have preferred a hub gear - but this would probably no longer be feasible at this price. Caution: Pay attention to the payload! - Georg Bleicher, test editor
