Folding bikes can be many things: the missing link in the transport chain to the workplace, a companion on a trip by train, or a travelling companion on a long-distance journey. Our nine test bikes include one for every purpose.
Since the advent of classic folding bikes in the 1970s, specialists have driven development forward. The smallest folding bikes fit easily under a desk, while the fastest are only slightly inferior to racing bikes.
But one problem remains: the smallest are not the fastest. Even perfectionists have to choose between driving and folding characteristics. And for once, the gap between these poles cannot simply be reduced by spending money. The most expensive bikes do not automatically offer the best combination of both requirements.
