For some couples and families in the city, it is definitely suitable as a car replacement. Nevertheless, it is also an insider tip as a touring bike.
In the USA, the Big Dummy has become a cult favourite. Unlike in Europe's metropolises, the idea of living in the city without a car is still revolutionary for many people there. But especially among younger people, including those with families, there are many who want to try to manage their everyday lives without a car, or at least with less use of one. Many use the Surly cargo bike for this purpose.
With the Free Radical, the Xtracycle company had the idea of offering a kit for normal bikes that extended the wheelbase by approx. 38 cm. This enables the use of two large panniers suspended on both sides; the everyday bike mutates into a cargo bike. Xtracycle asked Surly to build a fixed frame based on the same "longtail" principle.
The big plus point of the Big Dummy is that it rides almost like a normal bike when unloaded or with light luggage. The thick tyres provide effective cushioning. Even with heavy luggage, the bike remains easy to control, although we have never fully utilised the total load (rider and luggage) of 180 kilos. Thanks to its load capacity, flexibility and stable 26-inch wheels, the Surly is also well suited for long tours.
