We were amazed when the Fatboy rolled into the editorial office with gigantic 4.8-inch wheels on 90-millimetre-wide rims. What balloons! In comparison, the 4.0 tyres of the other two Fattys seem almost dainty. Anyone travelling on the attractively priced Fatboy doesn't have to worry about two things. Firstly, the traction and secondly, the publicity. Wherever the Fatboy appears, people crane their necks. The extra-wide Surly tyres (Specialized's own 4.8" tyres in the series) weigh 250 grams more than a 4.0 and come to 1.5 kilos each. Due to the weight and the slightly longer chainstays, the Fatboy rides a little slower and not quite as playful compared to the super-light, but also twice as expensive Salsa. Nevertheless, the Fatboy is a world better on the throttle than you would expect.
Conclusion: the monster among fatbikes with built-in free line choice.
PLUS Gigantic tyre volume ensures incredible traction, solid equipment with good price/performance ratio
MINUS Narrow 700 mm handlebars, no thru axles; slightly more nervous steering compared to Salsa and Sandman
