Monty is a bicycle manufacturer from Spain. The company has been building specialised bikes since the early 1980s. The brand is now part of BH Bikes and also has various city bikes and folding bikes in its programme. Now new: the cargo bikes from Monty with an 80 Nm motor from BH.

Monty started out with trial bikes. Since the takeover by BH Bikes in 2018, the brand has been focussed on urban mobility. The Spanish brand's portfolio now includes numerous city bikes, folding bikes and tip-proof trikes. Now new: the Cargo series with the Monty V8, V6 and V4 e-cargo bikes.

E-cargo bike: environmentally friendly means of transport for a friendlier future

Cycling is great fun, healthy and particularly environmentally friendly when used for journeys that would otherwise involve burning fossil fuels by car. On the way to a "friendlier, healthier and more sustainable environment" in our cities, the bicycle "has long since proven to be the most efficient, economical, sustainable and healthy way to get around the city quickly", Monty's press release summarises.

And the e-cargo bike is the ideal means of transport. Even large and heavy loads can be transported over more or less short distances on these pedal-powered utility vehicles. If you take a look at the three-wheeled trike models on the Monty website, it is clear that it was only a matter of time before the Spanish company followed suit.

Monty is adding three new models to the cargo bike market for 2024, all of which can handle loads of up to 85 kilos and, thanks to the support of an 80 Nm motor from parent company BH (BH 1-E), which is powered by a removable 540 Wh battery, can rock smoothly through the city. Or, of course, from village to village.

Monty V8

The Monty V8 with its low step-through longtail frame and 26-inch wheels is the platform for professionals or people who have to transport two children plus their daily shopping, for example. The internal cable routing ensures a clean look and that nothing gets caught anywhere. The large luggage rack at the rear with MIK-HD quick-release system ensures that up to two child seats or other bulky items and boxes can be securely stowed.

The Monty V8 is available with a robust rigid fork and 10-speed Deore derailleur gears from 3599.90 euros. For 4499.90 euros, the V8 Rover comes with XT gearing with 11 gears, a suspension fork and a four-piston brake system.

Monty V6

With its slightly shorter wheelbase, the Monty V6 e-cargo bike is the perfect everyday companion. A child seat and shopping bag fit on the robust rear rack, which can carry a total of 70 kilograms. The standard luggage rack at the front swallows a further 15 kilos.

The Monty V6 is available with a conventional frame or as a step-through model and is available as the Strada model with rigid fork and Alfine 11-speed hub from €3999.90 or as the Rover model with 11-speed Deore derailleur gears and suspension fork from €3799.90.

Monty V4

The Monty with the smallest cubic capacity - sorry - with the smallest turning circle is the Monty V4. Just like the baker's bike, only the other way round, a small 24-inch front wheel and an even smaller 20-inch wheel rotate in the frame.

Nevertheless, the compact vehicle is just as much of a heavy-duty transporter as its larger siblings: on the almost 80 centimetre long rear luggage rack, it can also shoulder large loads or up to two children, while at the same time manoeuvring the centre of gravity low down. No more waiting in traffic jams and searching for a parking space. With suspension fork, the Monty V4 costs from 3699.90 euros.

One-size-fits-all frame & other details

Thanks to a telescopic seat post with 125 millimetres of adjustment travel and an adjustable stem, Monty's e-cargo bikes are designed to fit people between 1.55 and 1.90 metres tall. Nice detail: the Monty bikes have a built-in lock that you can't forget at home. After all, an e-cargo bike like this should be securely locked up, as transporter bikes are currently very much in vogue.

The Monty V8 and V4 e-cargo bikes are equipped with a rear rack as standard; front racks or footboards, for example, cost extra. The Monty V6 comes with the front rack as standard. The range of accessories includes add-on parts to customise the bikes. There are spoke protectors for the Monty V6. The new Monty cargo bikes V8, V6 and V4 will be on display for the first time in Germany at the BH Bikes stand at Cyclingworld Europe from 15 to 17 March in Düsseldorf.

More on the topic of cargo bikes

Sebastian Brust was born in 1979 and was originally socialised on his grandmother's folding bike, but has mainly been riding studded tyres since his fifth birthday. Loves all kinds of bikes - and merging with nature. Believes that disc brakes are much safer today than they were 15 years ago and thinks he has helped with his brake and pad tests. However, the trained vehicle technology engineer very much regrets that the bicycle industry is orientating itself on what he considers to be the wrong ideals of the car industry. At BIKE, he corrects, produces and organises digital content on the website.
