Last winter, we already had the pleasure of milling through the snow in Val Martello on the aluminium Beargrease. This year, Salsa has gone one better and put one of the first fat bikes with a carbon frame and fork on the spike-ready fat tyres. The new Beargrease has not only shed a kilo, but has also been further optimised with slightly shorter chainstays and a slightly slacker head angle. The result is impressive. Everyone who came back from the test ride on the well-trained chubby bike was surprised by the agility and light-footedness of a bike of this type. The stiff frame also ensures a high level of precision. The handlebars could be a little wider.
ConclusionOnly twelve kilos and a lot of carbon make the Salsa a racer among fat bikes. Amazingly fast and finely finished. And of course very expensive.
PLUS Low overall weight for agile handling; cleanly finished with well thought-out details such as thru axle, etc.
MINUS Narrow 700 mm handlebars, only 160/140 mm brake discs; high-end equipment makes for a high price (with X9 from 3100 euros)
