US manufacturer Salsa has three hardtails and the first production fully in its fat bike programme. The Mukluk 2 offers a suspension fork, variable dropouts and a beautiful frame.

We don't know why the Mukluk 2 was named after reindeer leather boots. All we know is that it is the only suspension hardtail from the fatbike specialists. Thanks to the slackest steering angle in the comparison, the Salsa rides extremely smoothly and, due to its weight of almost 16 kilos, more comfortably than impulsively. For safety, the tough rolling Surly tyres claw uncompromisingly into the ground. We would have liked a straight seatpost for a better climbing position. The slack seat tube angle and cranked seat post shift the position far to the rear. We liked the narrow Surly double cranks with a Q-factor of 196 mm including ankle clearance. Downhill, as with almost all Fattys, we missed a telescopic dropper post. What we missed even more was a quick-release saddle.

ConclusionFatbike specialist Salsa offers a smooth-running bike for all occasions with the Mukluk 2, packaged in a classically beautiful frame.

PLUS Narrow Q-factor, solid downhill
MINUS High weight, offset seatpost, no quick-release saddle clamp
