With the Cargo Hybrid 800, CUBE has put together a well-rounded package for everyday urban life. Experience shows that the powerful Bosch motor accelerates with ease even when fully loaded, the large battery promises a long range, and the well-designed transport box significantly enhances its practicality for everyday use. Added to this are functional components, powerful brakes and a robust frame. Weighing 47 kilograms and with its bulky dimensions, it takes up a great deal of space and requires a fair bit of muscle when manoeuvring. However, for those who regularly transport children, shopping or equipment, the price of 4,399 euros still makes this one of the most attractive and capable e-cargo bikes in its price range.
At the heart of the system is the latest Bosch Cargo Line drive, delivering up to 100 Nm of torque. The motor’s performance is perfectly suited to its intended use: the system delivers plenty of power when setting off, provides confident assistance even on steep inclines, and effortlessly navigates city traffic even with heavy loads. The large 800 Wh battery offers ample range reserves. Those planning even longer journeys can optionally add the 250 Wh PowerMore range extender to the system; the interface for this is already in place.
CUBE opts for a spacious transport box made from EPP foam. This material keeps the weight down. Nevertheless, it absorbs shocks, dampens noise and is easy to clean. A rubber mat provides additional protection for the floor. Handy: a small storage compartment holds valuables and can be locked together with the bike. Optional child seats with a harness system transform the Cargo Hybrid into a family bike.
Shimano’s Cues 9-speed gear system offers a sufficient range of gear ratios for steep inclines. The hydraulic four-piston disc brakes are designed to maintain control even when fully loaded. Although the SR Suntour Mobie34 Cargo is not a high-end suspension fork, it nevertheless ensures greater comfort and riding stability on poor road surfaces. The wide Schwalbe Pick-Up tyres are perfectly suited to the high load capacity and are designed to offer excellent puncture protection.
Numerous details show that CUBE has designed the Cargo Hybrid specifically for everyday use. The sturdy centre stand makes loading and unloading easier, the integrated chain guard keeps clothes clean, and the special steering system reduces the turning circle. This is intended to make the long cargo bike surprisingly manoeuvrable in city traffic.
With the Cargo Hybrid 800, CUBE is targeting families and frequent cyclists who want to reduce the number of kilometres they travel by car in their daily lives. The large 800 Wh battery, in particular, sets this model apart from many of its competitors. At the same time, the spec is impressive, with no obvious cost-cutting measures. Its heavy kerb weight remains the biggest drawback – though, physically speaking, it would be almost impossible to create a fully-fledged ‘Long John’ design with this payload and at this price point that is any lighter. Judged by its features, technology and price, the Cargo Hybrid 800 is one of the most interesting electric cargo bikes in the mid-price segment.
