With its large pannier rack in front of the head tube, the "baker's bike" is a classic cargo bike. A low step-through is not mandatory, the baker's bike is also available with a normal diamond frame. For more stability and riding safety, theThe carrier must be attached to the frame - not to the fork. However, heavy luggage should not be transported on the front carrier anyway. The high centre of gravity of the transport load far forward above the front wheel has a negative effect on the overall centre of gravity. The wheel can appear wobbly and react sensitively or even nervously to steering movements. However, such cargo bikes are well suited for transporting loads of up to around 15 kilos on the front carrier. There is usually an additional pannier rack above the rear wheel. The advantage of the design: baker's bikes are no bigger than normal bikes. The Bergamont E-Cargoville Bakery Elite, for example, falls into the baker's bike category.
The Bergamont E-Cargoville Bakery Elite was already tested by MYBIKE last year. The bike at a glance:
Three-lane child transporters have become a familiar sight in urban environments. The wide front axle prevents the Cargobike from tipping over both when travelling and when stationary. This increases safety when travelling and when parking. A parking brake is mandatory to prevent the bike from rolling away after parking. The riding characteristics are simple and safe, but high cornering speeds should be avoided. The box normally offers space for two children. Make sure the seats are stable and have at least three-point safety belts. A tarpaulin with a window to protect passengers from rain and moisture is also a good idea. The large dimensions and heavy weight of the cargo bike are disadvantageous. A dry parking space is recommended for parking and storage.
So-called longjohns have a deep, very flexible loading area between the rider and the front wheel. This means that the load is never out of sight and the cargo bike's centre of gravity is low and therefore favourable. In principle, longjohns are easy to control. However, you should be aware of two peculiarities on your first few rides: There can be some play in the steering linkage, in which case the front wheel reacts somewhat imprecisely to steering impulses when travelling slowly. In addition, the view of the front wheel, which is far forward, is obstructed. This makes it difficult to judge the cornering radius at first. Once you have got used to the dimensions and handling characteristics, the long front loaders can be steered quickly and precisely, even when heavily loaded.
Longtails transport their loads on a long, heavy-duty rear carrier. There is space for up to two people, and special seats and cage frames are available for children. Alternatively, transport boxes or large panniers can be attached to the carrier of the cargo bike. The head tube, fork and front wheel are constructed in the same way as a normal bike, which is why longtails steer very directly and naturally. Only when setting off does the heavy weight on the carrier get in the way and the rear end feels a little soft. Once underway, longtails with small 20-inch wheels are manoeuvrable and easy to control. They can be parked in a relatively space-saving manner. With a permissible total weight of between 180 and 200 kilos, cargo bikes have a similarly high load capacity to other transport bikes.
Three-wheelers with tilting technology have a double-lever front axle, which allows the pedelecs to corner in a similar way to single-wheelers. As a result, the cargo bikes have hardly any dynamic disadvantages when turning and cornering quickly. The axle can be fixed horizontally to prevent the cargo bed from tipping sideways when stationary and dropping the load. On most models, the front axle is sprung, which improves driving safety and protects the transport load from impacts from the road surface. On the first few journeys, the loading area may tip slightly when starting off. Once you get the hang of it, the transporters steer smoothly and directly. As with all three-track vehicles, the large amount of space required can be a disadvantage.
