Most manufacturers only tell you in the footnotes what their bikes are supposed to be able to withstand. And even if there is a supposedly clear figure, there is often a catch. A maximum rider weight of 120 kilos sounds impressive, but unfortunately the system wheels on many complete bikes reduce this limit to a mere 90 kilos. If the "system weight" is specified, the rider's complete equipment and the bike are added to this. The end result is often just a two-digit body weight.
We show that there is another way in our Buying advice, especially for tall and heavy people. Is carbon also suitable for an XXL bike? What do the brakes on the bike need to be able to do? Which forks and rear shocks can withstand the strain of a rider weighing over two centimetres? And which wheels are really suitable for heavy riders?
The reassuring news is that there are more than enough bikes and parts on the market that can easily cope with size and weight. And if the standard range really isn't enough, customised products can help. The Juchem bike above is designed for a two-metre tall 150-kilo rider.
