What does it feel like to spend your entire adult life travelling? Heinz Stücke from Hövelhof has experienced this. At the age of 22, he left his home village in East Westphalia with his saddlebags packed and only returned for the first time at the age of 73. It is the incredible story of a nomadic life.
Over a period of 51 years, Heinz Stücke cycled around the world, covering an incredible 648,000 kilometres and visiting all 196 countries in the world. At the age of 18, Stücke circumnavigated the Mediterranean, signed on as a sailor on a ship and secretly landed on the Russian coast to cycle to Moscow and Vladivostok. He was repeatedly arrested by the militia and sent westwards on a train, but he always got off and followed his own path through the Soviet Union.
Back in Hövelhof, Stücke made a plan: before he settles down, he wants to travel to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. By bike, of course. In 1962, he embarked on this adventure, equipped with 300 US dollars in his luggage and extremely frugal in his spending, getting by on less than 1 US dollar a day. In Ethiopia, however, he was almost broke when Haile Selassie, the Emperor of Abyssinia, invited him to visit him and generously gave him 500 US dollars. This fortune enabled Stücke to achieve new goals: He rolls his bike onto the ferry in Cape Town and crosses over to Brazil for the first time.
Heinz Stücke shared these and many other stories in detailed conversations with the author Carina Wolfram, and the result is a book about an almost unbelievable life spent travelling.

The 21 bends up to Alpe d'Huez, a challenging climb in the Alps that stretches over 13.8 kilometres and has an average gradient of 8.1 per cent, are undoubtedly a legend in cycling. The decisive moments of the Tour de France have been experienced here several times and unforgettable heroes have been born. Marco Pantani stands out among them: in 1997, "the Pirate" conquered the mountain in record time with his unique cradle kick, making unforgettable cycling history.
The Italian climbing specialist had previously suffered serious injuries in an accident that could have ended his career. But he fought his way back and made a triumphant comeback on 19 July 1997 with his legendary ascent.
This impressive comeback is the source of inspiration for author Fred Poulet. In 21 captivating chapters, he delves deep into the mind of Marco Pantani and takes us through the sleepless night before his great triumph.
