Babies are allowed to go on tours in a bike trailer after just a few weeks. However, special rules apply when travelling in winter. A paediatrician explains what parents should look out for.

Most children love swinging through the city in a trailer. But is this also true on days with damp fog, icy sub-zero temperatures or when the child is coughing? Paediatrician Dr Rolf Höfler explains under what circumstances parents are allowed to take their little one in a trailer - and how best to protect them from the cold. "The decisive factor is not the time of year, but the baby's individual stage of development.

Babies should only ride in a bicycle trailer when their neck muscles are strong enough to stabilise their head against the centrifugal force when cornering," emphasises Dr Rolf Höfler. At this age, children can also go outside in winter if their parents dress them warmly enough.
