The London-based company Newlane is the first manufacturer ever to combine a patented two-part folding design with the Mips system. More than 150 manufacturers worldwide use the Swedish technology, which is designed to provide better protection against brain injuries in the event of a fall. According to the manufacturer, the integration into a foldable helmet is a first.
A Mips inner layer with a low-friction sliding plane is used in the safety equipment area. This design allows a relative movement of around 10 to 15 mm in all directions in order to reduce rotational forces in the event of an impact and thus minimise the risk of certain head and brain injuries.
The helmet is manufactured in Great Britain, fulfils the applicable EU safety standards and is available at a price of 180 euros.
The patented folding design allows the helmet to be folded flat in seconds. This means that the helmet, the first version of which was launched in 2024, can be easily stowed in a rucksack or handbag. Newlane is primarily targeting commuters and city bikers who want to be flexible in their everyday life. The integration of the Mips system should now significantly increase the level of safety even further, making the Newlane helmet an exciting alternative on the city helmet market.
The folding mechanism is as simple as it is ingenious: the folding mechanism is unlocked using a lever on the back. The upper part of the helmet can then be rotated 180 degrees and stowed away in the underside. This means that the Newlane is only a flat 81 millimetres high. The helmet is also equipped with a practical magnetic buckle on the chin strap and reflectors for better visibility in road traffic.
Newlane worked on the helmet for six years. The basic version was launched at the end of 2024 and is manufactured entirely in the UK. The helmet fulfils EU standards. The collaboration with Swedish safety specialist Mips began in 2024, two years after initial contact. Extensive prototypes and tests confirmed the compatibility of the flip-up design with the Mips system.
