Price-conscious outdoor sports enthusiasts can no longer ignore Decathlon. The Rockrider EXPL 540 Mips is the first MTB helmet from the French sporting goods giant with Swedish rotational protection. Our test shows what the helmet can do for just 60 euros.

The French sporting goods discounter has recently added an MTB helmet with MIPS system to its range under the Rockrider label for a mere 60 euros. It goes without saying that we wanted to include this price banger in our test.

Mips at an economy rate

Apart from the Swedish manufacturer's rotation system, you shouldn't expect too much from the features. There is no height adjustment for either the visor or the adjustment system, and the head ring is not fixed all the way round, but at around ear level. This could lead to difficulties when fitting. The choice of sizes is also limited. Decathlon only offers the helmet in M or L. But it is striking: The EXPL 540 has a high-quality finish and is even equipped with a polycarbonate shell on the underside. At least when it comes to looks, the Frenchman is in no way inferior to the competition.

Simple customisation system

The situation is slightly different when you put on the EXPL 540. Due to its classic cut, the Rockrider sits a little higher on the head than many modern trail helmets. The adjustment is also not quite as good as that of the competition. The head ring is not circumferential, which means that the head is not fixed in the helmet as well and the helmet can also slide up the forehead more easily. The strap system cannot be adjusted to the wearer, neither at the neck nor at the ears.

Thanks to its low weight and solid padding, the Rockrider sits comfortably on the head without pinching.

The Rockrider EXPL 540 in the lab

The moment of truth comes on our test bench and here the inexpensive Frenchman puts on a thoroughly convincing performance. Its simple MIPS system delivers the best value in terms of rotation protection and the protection in the event of a fall is also quite decent. Decathlon proves here that the price does not necessarily have to have an influence on the protective effect.

The situation is different when it comes to ventilation. A slight draught can only be felt on the forehead. However, hardly any ventilation channels and rather small openings prevent the air from flowing through the helmet.

Evaluation and conclusion

Unbeatable in terms of rotation protection, the impact protection is still okayPhoto: Stefan FreyUnbeatable in terms of rotation protection, the impact protection is still okay

Decathlon proves with the Rockrider EXPL 540: Good protection is not a question of price! The simple MIPS system in particular significantly reduces rotational forces. However, you have to make compromises when it comes to the features: The Rockrider is only adjustable at the - at least easily accessible - dial. There are only two sizes. The headband does not always fix the helmet perfectly. The EXPL 540 also scores only moderately in terms of ventilation. In view of the price, however, it is definitely worth recommending.
