In our last test, the POC Kortal Race MIPS scored highly with its extensive safety features. How does the Swede perform on our test bench and does it outperform the competition in terms of protection and comfort? Our test clarifies.

Topics in this article

Safety plays a major role in Sweden, and not just on the roads. Volvo and Scania invest heavily in innovative vehicle technology. This safety mindset also plays an important role in sport. A glance at the equipment list of the POC Kortal Race MIPS.

Extensive protective equipment

Together with the Swedish company with the bright yellow dot logo, Poc has developed its very own protection system for rotational forces. MIPS Integra incorporates a type of gel into the helmet padding, which is designed to absorb rotational movements during a fall.

But that's not all: the Poc Kortal Race is also equipped with a Recco system and an NFC Medical ID sensor, which can be used to store personal health data. As if that wasn't enough, the helmet shell also covers a larger area of the neck than many other helmets in the test. The visor also has a well-functioning break-away system.

All of this adds to the weight - 405 grams in size M - and the price also reflects the extensive features. Apart from the numerous safety features, POC relies on the tried and tested: a simple buckle as a fastener, triple height adjustment and fixed ear dividers that leave enough space around the ears.

Slim fit, secure fit

The special fit of the POC Kortal Race is also striking. In comparison, it is the narrowest cut helmet, which is mainly reflected in the somewhat cramped space at the temples. Round heads are unlikely to find room in the Kortal.

Although POC relies on standard components for the adjustment system, this is not necessarily a bad thing. The circumferential headband fixes the rather heavy helmet securely to the head and is easy to adjust in height. Less successful is the dial located deep under the helmet shell, which is almost impossible to operate in the top position. The Y straps on the ears are fixed, but leave enough room for manoeuvre. The straps run smoothly.

Even though the visor can hardly be adjusted with one hand, we liked the break-away function. It protects the head and prevents the visor from breaking in the event of a fall.

POC Kortal Race MIPS in the lab

As in the last test in 2023, the POC Kortal Race secured top marks in our laboratory measurements. The Integra system, developed in close collaboration with MIPS, seems to absorb rotational forces cleanly. In terms of shock absorption, the Swedish helmet performs even slightly better.

The numerous ventilation ducts also seem to work very well here. The airflow is clearly noticeable from the front to the rear and ensures pleasant cooling during the journey.

Evaluation and conclusion

The Poc delivers solid values in the lab, and the ventilation is also good.Photo: Stefan FreyThe Poc delivers solid values in the lab, and the ventilation is also good.

Safety is a top priority for Poc. That's why the outstanding laboratory values are complemented by a Recco system and an NFC chip for medical information. The Kortal also covers a large area of the head. The fit is great, but a little specialised and very narrow. The adjustment system is rather simple for the price but functional - only the dial is hidden deep under the shell in the high setting. Well ventilated, but heavy and expensive.
