The Giro Coalition is not entirely new on the market. But with the MIPS spherical system and other exciting details, the Californians have given their lightweight full-face helmet a major update. Giro promises optimum protection with an impressively light weight of just 800 grams in size medium. The MTB helmet is ASTM-DH/NTA-certified and features Mips' Spherical Technology. This is designed to cushion impacts at high and low speeds thanks to a low-friction sliding layer between independent EPP and EPS foam layers, thus reducing the risk of concussion.
Another highlight of the Coalition Spherical is the new chin guard with the Halo system, which is said to offer an innovative technology for better absorption of crashes on the chin guard. Giro also claims that the Coalition Spherical offers 11% more efficient cooling than the Insurgent Spherical - the US company's downhill model - and can even compete with racing helmets in terms of ventilation and cooling.
If you prefer travelling without a chin guard but are still looking for a little more protection, you should take a look at the new jet helmets. Here are the most exciting models.
The helmet has a total of 25 ventilation openings, which allow the air to flow through massive intake openings at the front through deep inner channels to the back of the helmet and out through efficient exhaust openings. Giro also states that the Halo system inside the helmet can absorb and distribute kinetic forces, resulting in improved shock absorption.
The Coalition Spherical is now available in stores (z. e.g. here) and via the manufacturer's website. The price for the helmet is 340 euros RRP.
It is also exciting that the Giro Coalition Spherical fulfils the downhill standard ASTM-1952-DH despite its low weight of just 800 grams. This means that it meets the ever-increasing demand for full-face helmets with a high level of comfort, maximum lightness and good ventilation. The new Coalition Spherical should therefore be a top companion in more aggressive terrain or on trail rides with the Enduro or E-MTB. It remains to be seen whether the Coalition Spherical actually fulfils these requirements and whether it can keep up with other helmets on the market in terms of safety and comfort.
