Bruises and chafed skin are part and parcel of biking. But it can also quickly become dangerous. Especially if you're travelling alone.

Flying over your home trails or exploring new descents. Mountain biking is a lot of fun, but it also harbours risks. Unfortunately, falls are one of them. To avoid serious injuries, protective equipment is constantly being developed and improved. Helmets, gloves, knee pads and back protectors are already standard equipment for the most part. But it was only a matter of time before smart technologies found their way into bikers' safety equipment.

Poc is now also using the Recco system, proven in snow sports, for bicycle helmets to make it easier to find bikers who have had accidents in difficult terrain. Health data can also be stored in the Kortal helmet to provide the emergency services with important information about possible intolerances. Manufacturers are going even further with crash sensors such as Angi, Tocsen and C-Safe. They have been specially developed for bikers who are often travelling alone. Acceleration sensors measure the forces acting on the head and are designed to reliably detect a fall. A countdown starts in the event of a severe impact. If the biker does not end the countdown, the system sends a message to pre-defined emergency contacts. GPS data included. This enables the casualty to be located quickly.

Bruises and chafed skin are part and parcel of mountain biking. But it can also quickly become dangerous. Especially if you're travelling alone, you can't always count on help in the forest. These clever gadgets call for help when you can't do it yourself.

Our test reveals how reliably the safety systems work in practice. You can download the entire article from BIKE 12/2021 as a PDF below.

The test report costs 1.49 euros. Why not free of charge? Because quality journalism has a price. In return, we guarantee independence and objectivity. This applies in particular to the tests in BIKE. We don't charge for them, but the opposite is the case: we do charge for them - tens of thousands of euros every year.
