The trend in mountain bike geometry is clearly pointing in one direction: the reach is increasing and the steering angle is getting slacker and slacker. Bikes are therefore being trimmed for ever higher speeds. But caution is advised: Increasing speed also increases the risk of falling and therefore the risk of injury. At this point, everyone has to decide for themselves whether they can resist the rush of speed or whether they would rather use appropriate protective equipment. However, one thing is clear: nothing works without a helmet. No matter how fast you ride and whether you are at the limit or not, a helmet is mandatory when mountain biking. And let's be honest: the days when helmets were heavy, uncomfortable and bulky are over. There is now a helmet to suit everyone.
More and more helmet manufacturers are currently coming out with enduro helmets. We have the Sixsixone Evo AM Helmet tested. This is primarily aimed at all-mountain riders and enduro riders, as the rear is pulled far down for more protection. To ensure that it fits as many head shapes as possible, it is equipped with the Boa fastener familiar from shoes. The head is very well enclosed thanks to the far forward adjustment. This means that the helmet can even be adjusted with one hand while riding. The adjustment range is also large enough to allow the helmet to be worn over a helmet cap. Another special feature of the Evo AM is the magnetic fastener on the chin. This can also be easily operated with one hand.
The 661 is available in two versions: either with or without MIPS (Multidirectional Impact System). The suspension used inside the helmet is designed to significantly reduce rotational energy in the event of an impact. We tested the cheaper model without MIPS. Both helmets fulfil the EN DIN 1078 standard. Fortunately, we were spared a fall during the entire test period and can therefore say little about the actual protection. The top model is equipped with MIPS and costs 189 euros. The tested version changes hands for 139 euros. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to colours: The top model is available in three colours, the cheaper model in four.
When you put the MTB helmet on for the first time, the low weight of 345 grams in size M/L is immediately noticeable. Once you put it on, adjust it and close it, you quickly forget about it. Thanks to the many ventilation openings, there is no risk of acute overheating and the visor also provides pleasant protection from the sun, rain and dirt without obstructing your view. However, with so much light there is also shadow: even if the Boa fastener is fastened tightly, the helmet slips a little on moto bumps or similarly fast impacts. However, you can counteract this by wearing goggles. With a more moderate riding style, however, this problem is negligible anyway.
Ultimately, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages. The Sixsixone Evo AM is particularly suitable for downhill-orientated touring riders. The 345 gram MTB helmet is also suitable for enduro riders, but then only as a second helmet as an alternative to a full-face helmet.
