Cyclists want safety, comfort and functionality - on tour and in everyday life. We have tested new accessories and these parts can help.

Smith Express MIPS: The safe helmet for everyday use

The most important thing for a bike helmet first: the Smith Express MIPS is secure, sits firmly and comfortably on the head - even with cycling goggles and an underhelmet cap - it can be easily adjusted with a twist lock and is also properly ventilated with several air vents. And with a weight of just 290 grams, it even plays in the same league as lightweight touring helmets. This means that the helmet is also relatively versatile, from everyday routes in the city to longer excursions at the weekend. What is also not necessarily a matter of course: the Smith Express is available in three different sizes and the inner padding is removable and washable. The helmet also impresses with its modern design and choice of colours. The small downsides: Our testers missed a chin pad to prevent chafing of the skin and sufficient reflective surfaces to be seen at night or in poor light conditions. However, a rear light is attached to the rear of the helmet as an alternative. Price: 99.95 euros >> e.g. at Decathlon or Rosebikes available.

  • Plus: MIPS safety equipment; integrated rear light
  • Minus: no chin pad, few reflective elements

Ecco MX Low MID GTX: multifunctional cycling and outdoor shoe

The somewhat bulky, robust appearance is deceptive, the mid-height shoe is lighter than it looks. As an outdoor shoe for the transitional period, it made a good impression on the testers from the outset: walking in the city is just as comfortable as on easy hikes. The sole only reaches its limits on steep, rocky mountain passages. The situation is similar when cycling. The grip on the pedals is good. For longer tours, the sole could be a little stiffer. The Goretex membrane is the bad-weather plus: it keeps your feet dry even in the rain and the wind protection means they don't cool down as quickly. Conclusion: A practical, comfortable outdoor shoe for not too extreme cycling and hiking activities. Price: 140.00 euros >> e.g. available at Bergfreunde.

Riding Culture Lucas Huppi: Cool jeans for everyday cyclists

The Riding Culture brand is primarily known to motorcyclists. In any case, the Cycling jeans from Switzerland is quite robust and abrasion-resistant. The material is 13.5oz stretch denim made from 67% cotton, 23% polyester, 6% polyethylene and some Lycra. Visually, the "Lucas Huppi" hardly differs from a classic pair of black jeans. Only the (dispensable) ribbons on the waistband add a somewhat unique fashionable touch. They are surprisingly comfortable to wear. However, at higher outside temperatures and on longer bike rides, the thighs become sweaty. As with everyday jeans, the five pockets should not be packed too full, otherwise they will get in the way when pedalling. Cycling commuters may miss a water-repellent finish on the jeans material. Washing in the washing machine is also no problem, simply put them in the 30° programme together with other jeans. Price: 139.00 euros.

  • Plus: many sizes
  • Minus: Not water-repellent

Brooks Scape Feed Pouch: Practical bikepacking pouch

Bikepacking requires versatility, especially when it comes to the Bags on the bike. The Scape Feed Pouch from Brooks proves to be very practical. The robust, waterproof pouch is ideal for storing things that you want to have quick access to, such as a water bottle, mobile phone, small camera, muesli bar, wallet and much more. The container can be attached to the bike in many positions using the Velcro straps supplied. Our test editor attached it to the handlebars and stem with two Velcro straps for the test tours. Anyone wondering about the opening at the bottom: This is intended as a drain in case it accidentally rains in or a bottle leaks. The shoulder strap is also practical for carrying the container detached from the bike. The good workmanship of the container is striking. Unfortunately, the "Pouch" is only available in this one dark colour. Price: 50,00 Euro >> e.g. available at Rosebikes.

  • Plus: well made, versatile, waterproof
  • Minus: Colour selection

Black Roll Recovery Pillow: The comfort travel pillow

A good night's sleep is a basic requirement for daily well-being. However, many people find it difficult to get a good night's sleep - especially when travelling and sleeping in unfamiliar beds. We don't want to talk about relaxation techniques or sleeping pills here, but rather about ergonomic aids, for example in the form of a new type of pillow. First things first: our tester had a positive experience. Blackroll is known for its black fascia roll. However, the inventors from Switzerland are also involved in other areas of sport and health. They came up with the Recovery Pillow for a more restful sleep. The key feature is its inner life: The elastic, breathable and pollutant-free memory foam adapts to the shape of the head or the natural sleeping position and returns to its original shape after relief. The cover is soft, skin-friendly and naturally washable. However, if you prefer, you can also put a conventional pillowcase over it.

After several weeks of testing, our tester felt that he actually fell asleep a little faster and slept more peacefully. The reason: probably due to the gentle stabilisation and support of the head, cervical spine and neck...! Price: 89.90 euros >> e.g. at Amazon available.

  • Plus: Bag for travelling
  • Minus: only one size; foam filling cannot be washed
