We freeriders rarely fall on our heads, but if we do: oh my! Modern Enduro helmets are designed to provide maximum protection and even ward off rotational forces.

Safety features such as MIPS & Co. are designed to reduce the risk of head injuries by minimising rotational forces. The EN 1078 test standard for helmets is unable to depict these scenarios. In order to test the helmets realistically, we have developed a helmet test stand ourselves. The helmet is fitted to an aluminium test head weighing 4.9 kilograms.

Some helmet models are still available on the market both with and without the MIPS layer. A direct comparison is the best way to illustrate the effect of the Swedish safety system. To illustrate this, we tested the Lazer Impala MIPS as well as the identical model without MIPS.

With and without MIPS: With the Lazer Impala MIPS, the probability of suffering a moderate concussion is only 26 per cent. Without MIPS it is 39 per cent. The acceleration forces are also reduced to 98.5 g (109.8 g without MIPS). In our opinion, the thin, sliding shell inside the helmet has no negative impact on wearing comfort.Photo: Georg Grieshaber With and without MIPS: With the Lazer Impala MIPS, the probability of suffering a moderate concussion is only 26 per cent. You can download the comparison test of the ten enduro helmets from FREERIDE 1/2021 as a PDF below the article. The test costs 1.99 euros.

Why not free of charge? Because quality journalism has a price. In return, we guarantee independence and objectivity. This applies in particular to the tests in FREERIDE. We don't pay for them, but the opposite is the case: we charge for them, namely tens of thousands of euros every year.
