Aventon is still an unknown quantity in this country, but is already an established name in the e-bike market in the USA. The brand with Chinese roots was founded in California over ten years ago and initially made a name for itself in the cycling community with single-speed and fixie bikes. Aventon now claims to be one of the leading e-bike manufacturers in North America and controls large parts of the production process itself - from welding to painting. Now the company is venturing across the pond.
Aventon has also extensively adapted its product range especially for the European market launch. Instead of reduced fixies and e-bikes with balloon-like wide tyres, the new models now look like classic touring e-bikes with a modern look. The Trava is the first bike to position itself as a versatile SUV for everyday use and weekend tours.
The centrepiece is the Aventon Ultro S mid-motor based on Gobao with 90 Nm torque and 750 watts of power - values on a par with Bosch and the like. The 800 Wh battery promises a decent range. The total weight of the bikes should be at the usual level for this sector of 27.2 kg (diamond frame) or 28.5 kg (step-through).
For prices starting at € 2,899, the Trava Adv is well equipped: 100 mm coil suspension fork, Shimano Cues 10-speed gears, Tektro disc brakes with 180 mm discs and a suspension seat post with 35 mm stroke for maximum comfort. The more upmarket Trava Exp even comes with Enviolo automatic gears and belt drive for 3899 euros. Both models are equipped with a pannier rack, mudguards, integrated lights and a kickstand for everyday use.
However, the real highlight of the Trava is the Aventon Control Unit (ACU) - Aventon's in-house control system. This is where it gets exciting: the ACU transforms the e-bike into a networked safety system and is intended to offer not just additional technology but real added value for the user. It is controlled entirely via the Aventon app using Bluetooth.
The Trava is available in three colour variants: Matt Black, Camouflage and Haze. The diamond frame is available in sizes M, L and XL, the step-through model in S/M and L. Unusually, Aventon relies on slightly smaller 27.5-inch wheels, which should give the bike agile handling.
Aventon is attempting an interesting balancing act: on the one hand, the brand wants to offer a classic e-bike at a price that gives classic brands a headache. On the other hand, Aventon is also focusing on a smart ecosystem with extensive safety features in the affordable segment. It remains to be seen whether the calculation works out and whether the ACU delivers what it promises in everyday use. The technical data certainly looks promising.
