The most expensive bike is also the one with the best points. Trek scores top marks with the revised Fuel EX top model. The frame has become 120 grams lighter thanks to the carbon seat stays and magnesium rocker, but the bottom line is that the chassis weight remains the same as in 2009 (BIKE 3/09) due to the 120 gram heavier DRCV shock: 2450 grams is an excellent value. Trek offers everything that technology currently has to offer. At the front, the Fox fork with tapered steerer tube and QR15 thru-axle ensures maximum steering precision.
The suspension is even smoother than in 2009 thanks to the new shock with its two air chambers. All test riders agreed that the Fuel EX outperformed the competition in the practical test. Great riding position despite the long geometry, neutral handling, very good uphill and downhill even a touch more confident, uncomplicated and faster than the other - already high-level - competitors. However, contrary to the general trend, the bike costs 500 euros more than in 2009, which is difficult to argue with. Alternative: the 9.8 model with Shimano XT for 4500 euros. Very good: five frame sizes are available!
CONCLUSIONLuxury all-mountain with a wide range of uses. Excellent riding characteristics, but very expensive.
