The fascination of the pump track: 4 dirt bikes in a quick check
Dirt bikes are the perfect fun machines for pump tracks. Expert Flo Konietzko has picked out four exciting dirt bike models.

THE ALLROUNDER: Rose The Bruce | 979 Euro

The Bruce is a good all-rounder from the mail order company. The geometry tends to be long and slack, but can handle dirt jumps and pump tracks at the same time. The equipment is solid. For the more expensive model, you have to add 320 euros and get a more powerful fork, among other things.

THE SPECIAL OFFER: Canyon Stitched 360 | 999 Euro

Canyon's entry-level model is a playful all-rounder with short chainstays. The Stitched makes it easy to put pressure on the front wheel. The spec is fine. Disadvantage: the pudgy weight. The more expensive model (11.5 kilos) is available for an extra 500 euros.

THE AFFORDABLE: NS Bikes Metropolis 3 | 839 Euro

The brand from Poland relies on a steel frame for its dirt bike. The geometry is up to date and offers a wide range of uses. However, the frame and heavy add-on parts add to the weight. The Poles state the operating weight (with pedals) at 13.9 kilos. Great: the price.

THE EXTRAVAGANT: Transition PBJ | 2099 Euro

PBJ stands for: Pump, Bump, Jump. In other words, exactly what you want to do with a dirt bike. Striking: the chic look of the steel frame. The add-on parts, such as the Rockshox Pike, are high quality, but drive up the price. Three frame sizes are available.

Dirtbike knowledge

  • Pump track or dirt track: Basically every dirt bike works on the Pump track and on the dirt track. Beginners tend to opt for the smaller frame size for better manoeuvrability.
  • Used can be worthwhile: Many dirt bikes are currently sold out. It can also be worthwhile in terms of price to buy a second-hand bike. Important: make sure the bike is in good condition and check the weld seams on the head tube and bottom bracket.
  • Steel or aluminium: Steel allows a filigree frame shape. However, aluminium frames are the rule and are also lighter and stiffer.
  • One brake must be enough: If you only ride your dirt bike on the pump track or dirt spot, you can get by with a rear brake. This saves money and ensures a clean cockpit. A nice side effect: handlebar spins (barspin) are possible.
  • Is light always better? Weight also plays a role with dirt bikes. Ideally, an entry-level model should weigh less than twelve kilos. Classic dirt bikes do not have gears.
