With the Crafty R, the Spaniards from Mondraker have created a flagship all-mountain bike. Strong uphill, strong downhill, strong on the flat. But from the beginning: the only bike in the Comparison test of the All Mountains in EMTB 3/2021 The Crafty came in a medium frame size, as Mondraker traditionally favours extremely long main frames. In M, the e-mountain bike lands right in the middle of the L-bike field. Potential buyers should bear this in mind when choosing a size. Thanks to the low front end, the 29-inch bike has a sporty feel. You can tackle steep climbs without worrying. You stay in control when centred over the bike and the front wheel hardly rises. The rear suspension with a virtual pivot point is very impressive. Unevenness is absorbed extremely sensitively, but the shock only works as much as is really necessary. No bobbing, no bottoming out. That's impressive.
The test report on the Mondraker Crafty R in the video.
The Mondraker was our favourite on the challenging uphill. At the start of the descent, our test lap circled flat through the forest. Maintaining momentum and accelerating the bike is on the programme here. The Crafty also does this well. Considering its high weight, it remains pleasantly lively - thanks to the reactive suspension. Subsequently, the descent becomes rougher and tilts down steep, rocky bends. This is where the bike is really in its element. The rear suspension is also impressive downhill, while the massive Fox 38 is an equally potent partner at the front. This allows the bike to be steered very precisely through the key sections. Riding errors are also generously ironed out. Only the weak G2 brakes clearly limit the enduro qualities of the bike. What a pity! In addition, the cockpit could be tidier and the equipment could be of better quality.
The Crafty R from Mondraker* is an all-mountain par excellence for all situations and comfort and sports bikers. Lots of riding safety uphill and downhill. Still a lot of fun to ride. Slight weaknesses in the equipment.
