Tastes are different. In some men's dreams, the hydrogen-blonde Baywatch bosom wonder plays the leading role, in others the elfish beauty from Pirates of the Caribbean. Lush or petite - mountain bikers also show similar differences in taste when it comes to suspension travel. While BIKE editor Henri Lesewitz, for example, thunders through the mountains exclusively on a hardtail, FREERIDE editor Dimitri Lehner rolls off with at least 150 millimetres.
It's hard to say which of the two is more fun to ride. But they both have one thing in common: they favour a very narrowly defined area of use. That's why the purist hardtail suits Lesewitz and the fat freerider suits Lehner.
If, on the other hand, you want to take a broad approach to mountain biking, you need to look for the right sports equipment in bike categories with a wide range of uses: you can choose from marathon, all-mountain and enduro bikes. Within these categories, we have repeatedly tested bikes over the last few months that stand out due to their extraordinary all-round talent. You will find eight of these super all-rounders in this test.
