Stevens "Glide" '09 is more of a sports bike than a comfort wonder. A nobly equipped bike with which you can also compete in marathons.

The top model of the Stevens "Glide" series enters this comparison test with the bonus of being the lightest bike. 12.5 kilos with the available suspension travel is a good start. For 2009, developer Thomas Kamm has revised the all-mountain suspension with a view to efficiency. A "High Volume" damper from Fox with adapted compression and rebound damping works at the rear. Bobbing is now completely eliminated, although the rear end is less sensitive than its 2008 predecessor. Overall, the Stevens has the sportiest overall set-up of the test group, even the Fox fork, which is actually consistent in its performance, seems unusually firm this time. Stevens mounts the version with a "QR15" thru-axle. As usual, the Hamburg-based company draws on the full range of equipment and stands up to mail order companies. The "Team" version is the top model in the "Glide" range, and that's as good as it gets. For 3499 euros, the Hamburg-based company adds Shimano "XTR", Mavic "Crossmax ST" wheels and Ritchey "WCS" parts. You could compete in a marathon with this luxury equipment. Low cockpit and high bottom bracket - good for climbing but bad for downhill riding. The look is race-like, but not as unusual as some of the competition.

TUNING TIP: Fit wider tyres.

CONCLUSIONS: Stevens "Glide" '09 is more of a sports bike than a comfort wonder. A nobly equipped bike with which you can also compete in marathons.
