The Trek Remedy is the father Abraham of long-travel touring fullys, a milestone in the all-mountain category. While it was still considered a thoroughbred enduro bike when it was launched on the German market in 2008 with a 160 mm fork, Trek expanded the Remedy's range of use in 2010 by reducing its weight (carbon frame, 32 mm fork) and upgrading to 150 millimetres of travel. The Americans took the biggest development step with the 2014 series, which is available in either 27.5 or 29 inches. Just how popular the Remedy is can be read in internet forums, where the model is discussed on over 360 pages. Technically, the Remedy has set new standards: for example, in 2008 it already had a tapered head tube (E2) for noticeable stiffness - now standard everywhere. The influence of the ABP link, on the other hand, is hardly noticeable (intended to reduce brake pedalling). Frame weight: three kilos with shock on the aluminium models, carbon frames save half a kilo and are slightly less stiff.
Where does the Remedy get stuck? The wet paint on the 2010 model was disappointing in the endurance test, the seat quick release bent, the Bontrager tyres were out of round and the wheels had defective pawls (2010). Before buying, you should check whether the previous owner has repaired the paintwork or covered it with film. We've had three Remedys in the endurance test so far, the Remedy 9 29 is currently running: the rear triangle had to be dismantled and the bearings greased. You also have to keep an eye on the lower headset bearing (pull the fork out a little). A thorough inspection of a used Remedy is therefore just as important as with any other second-hand bargain. Overall, however, this successful model is not a conspicuously vulnerable bike, but rather the opposite: above-average resilience, and there is no criticism of the frame in particular. Please note: The lifetime warranty is officially only valid for the first owner.
The Remedy has changed its character from the 2010 model year in the direction of All Mountain. The carbon version is lighter and comes very close to being the perfect touring bike for difficult terrain. The top model 9.9 was unremarkable in the endurance test.
New prices 20082599 to 3999 Euro
New prices 2014: 2499 to 4999 Euro
Driver profileEnduro (160 mm fork) until 2009, then all-mountain/heavy touring with 150 mm travel.
StrengthsRiding characteristics and ride comfort, wide range of models, good kinematics
Problems: Paint quality, wheel quality (Bontrager), in individual cases DRCV dampers. Spare parts e.g. from: www.bike-alm.de
Our recommendation: From 2010, DRCV dampers are fitted in the 150 mm chassis. Noticeably more comfortable! If weight is important, look for a full carbon frame from 2012: even lighter and unproblematic durability.
