The similarity is astonishing despite the different materials. However, the rigidity of the aluminium model is significantly higher.

If it weren't for the two different numbers behind the Genius lettering, it would be even more difficult to visually differentiate between the frames. The Scott developers copied each other's bikes - but we don't know who modelled for whom. The only distinguishing features are the scaled weld seams on the Genius 40 and the slightly narrower top tube of the Genius 30.

The equipment differs slightly. While the Genius 40 is fitted with a wild mix of components (Truvativ, SRAM X-9, Shimano XT/SLX), the Genius 30 has a Shimano SLX groupset together with the slightly more powerful Avid Elixir R brakes - measured against the Avid Juicy Five on the 40 Genius. The extremely high stiffness of the aluminium version stands out in the lab results: At just under 71 Nm/°, the value is 14 Nm/° higher than the carbon version.

You can also feel this on the trail when changing corners quickly. Once again, we were fascinated by the extremely versatile suspension of the Scott bikes. Using the handlebar remote, the rear suspension can be set to either 150 millimetres soft or 100 millimetres firm, and there is also a locking function. However, tuning the Equaliser 2 damper is not always easy. One of the two air chambers has to be inflated to over 20 bar - this requires a special pump. Excessive deviations in the rebound damping have a negative effect on the function. But when everything is right, the Genius is an enormously versatile all-rounder.

If the testers had to choose between the two materials, they would opt for the aluminium model. The high rigidity, the good riding performance of the excellent chassis and a price that is 450 euros lower cannot be justified by a weight saving of 250 grams.
