The Heckler MX stands out with its light-footed handling. A real fun machine! However, others are fighting for the test victory, because the Santa Cruz E-MTB is special.

For the EMTB issue 6/2020 we set out to find the ultimate all-round e-mountainbike for 2021.

At 20.2 kilos, the Heckler MX is by far the lightest bike in the test. However, Santa Cruz has put its nimble 2021 eMTB on a diet: lightweight suspension elements with comparatively little travel, slimmed-down wheels and the new, lighter Shimano EP8 motor. What has remained is the small, lightweight battery with 500 watt hours - an absolute exception in 2021. Is the radical weight reduction worth it? And how! In terms of handling and agility, the Heckler is in a league of its own. Anyone who prefers optimum handling on shallow trails to a large battery capacity and sedan-like swallowing capacity will find the Santa Cruz a light-footed, fun and yet racy companion.

In rough enduro terrain, however, the Heckler needs an experienced pilot. Where you can rattle over roots on a Trek Rail in a relaxed manner, you really have to work hard at the wheel of the Santa Cruz. That takes strength. The narrow Rockshox Pike in particular reaches its limit earlier than the thicker forks of the competition with its moderate travel. Compared to all the other candidates, the Heckler is firmer and more direct. Experienced bikers can also let it run downhill, as the geo is downhill-orientated. That's not to say that the bike can't climb. On the contrary. On climbs, the rider sits centrally above the bike, the rear suspension remains active without sagging, so you can climb even steeper ramps in a relaxed manner and retain full control. The riding position is balanced and also suits long tours. However, a second battery is required for the Heckler. A really fat wallet anyway. Find out where the Santa Cruz Heckler MX ranks among the top all-rounders in the current issue of EMTB 6/20!

The 500 Wh battery is firmly screwed into the down tube. A 4-way Allen key is required for removal. The 500 Wh battery is firmly screwed into the down tube. A 4-way Allen key is required for removal.

All results of the comparative test

Which bike offers the best compromise for all areas of use? And which one stands out as a comfortable tourer or a fun trail rocket? We tested the e-bikes in direct comparison on a variety of trails and tours. Each candidate also underwent an extensive laboratory procedure. Who excels when it comes to range? And who has the centre of gravity and weight best under control? The entire test with all results, data and details can be found in EMTB 6/2020. You can also download the complete comparison test of the super all-rounders as a PDF below the article. The test costs 2.99 euros. You can obtain the EMTB conveniently in the Subscription, in our Online shop and as an app edition for Apple and Android.
