The newest model in the Lapierre programme is also one of the oldest. The X-Control system was introduced in 2001 and is now in its third generation. Only minor changes have been made to the actual rear suspension system. However, the model range has grown. In addition to the X-Control Race cross-country line with 100 millimetres of suspension travel, there is also a more comfortable Marathon series with 120 millimetres of suspension travel. The difference between the lines lies in the weight and the equipment. While the top race version 900 with SRAM XX groupset and SID Worldcup has a complete weight of just 10.1 kilos (frame weight: 1.95 kilos), the marathon version 910 shines with Shimano XTR groupset, Mavic wheels and Fox suspension including 2010 Fox 32 FRL-120 with new FIT Remote System. Weight of the complete bike: 10.4 kilos.
The entry into the X-Control world from Lapierre is cheaper, but a little heavier. The X-Control 210 with aluminium frame, Rock Shox Recon, Shimano SLX components and a weight of 12.9 kilos starts at just under 1499 euros. In addition, a women's version with modified geometry and customised components will be available in 2010. Name: X-Control 310.
DRIVING REPORT X-Control 910: At one of the biggest mountain bike events in France, the Pass'Portes du Soleil, we were able to subject the new X-Control 910 with 120 millimetres of travel to its first test. On the fast downhills and crisp climbs around Morzine, the X-Control shone with its smooth handling (steering angle one degree slacker) and lively uphill acceleration. The suspension is very drive-neutral and conveys a light-footed climbing sensation. The small 160 mm disc on the Formula R1 feels overstretched on long descents.
IN THE ALL-MOUNTAIN SECTOR the Zesty shines in a new guise. The French company is focussing on carbon and low weight. Lapierre wants to save 500 grams on the frame, which should only weigh 2.29 kilos in size M including the shock. The 2010 Zesty has 140 millimetres of travel and a shorter top tube for better handling. The Zesty also starts with an entry-level model weighing 13.2 kilos (aluminium frame), the 214, which is expected to cost 2100 euros. The top model, the 914, weighs just 11.1 kilos (carbon frame) and comes with high-quality equipment including Fox suspension and Mavic Crossmax SLR wheels for an estimated 4999 euros.
REAL RACER will be delighted with the new Prorace 900 carbon hardtail. Lapierre offers 100 per cent carbon, including dropouts, cable routing, bottom bracket and headset seals. Frame weight: 1040 grams, complete bike weight: 8.8 kilos.
