Rattle-free biking, no more torn derailleur hangers, no more chain jams in mud and ice. This vision becomes reality with Katz. But it doesn't work completely without a chain, because a standard chain runs inside the encapsulated drive unit and not a toothed belt, as you might expect. Together with the Rohloff hub, the Katz drivetrain has 14 gears - enough for all-mountain use. However, the chain never needs to be cleaned, lubricated or re-tensioned. Removing the rear wheel is easier than expected. The bike is produced 100 per cent in Switzerland (apart from the supplied parts such as the Rohloff hub). Individualists also get their money's worth in other ways: 15 colours are available, plus many decors and some options such as a frame-drive kit for self-assembly (5190 euros).
In our test laboratory, the Alp shows very good measured values, performs very well in terms of stiffness (79 Nm/degree) and efficiency measurement. You don't feel any influence from the drivetrain, the pivot point is ideally positioned at the height of the single chainring. You can also tell that Katz is backed by thoroughbred bikers when it comes to geometry and equipment. The geometry fits at first glance, the needs of an all-mountain rider are met with wide handlebars, fat tyres and long suspension travel. On the trails, the riding position and handling are very good, and apart from the typical whirring of the Rohloff hub, the bike is pleasantly silent. However, the impression remains that the drivetrain swallows some power. Attention: Racers will be bothered by the wide Q-factor (12 mm wider than XTR).
Conclusion: Exciting idea successfully realised. Katz offers an adult no-stress all-mountain for all weathers.
