It was still almost warm from welding, that's how close the Intense rolled into the editorial office. The Spider 29 is a brand new model that, according to Intense, was developed for the cross-country/race sector - different countries, different customs. Here in Germany, the bike with its 120 mm suspension travel clearly falls into the all-mountain sector. The suspension offers two suspension travels at the rear and a level control on the fork (which you don't need even in the high Alps because the bike climbs excellently thanks to the steep seat angle). In an all-mountain comparison, the Spider comes out on top at 12.45 kilos, which is not only due to the chassis, but also to the No Tubes wheels, which save a kilo compared to the Rocky Mountain!
This has an effect on the bike's suitability for touring, long climbs are easy and the Intense outperforms its competitors uphill. The VPP rear suspension is typically US-American, giving the bike a bumpy ride with the shock open. These drive influences are particularly noticeable on firm ground. However, the bobbing can be eliminated with the shock platform or even the lockout mode. Downhill, the Spider shows its strengths. It rolls over the trails with high riding stability, is manoeuvrable enough for hairpin bends and the suspension is confidence-inspiring and comfortable. Nice: thru-axle option at the rear, 18 colours.
