E-bike pioneer Haibike has completely revised its All Mountain SDuro for the new season. The Schweinfurt-based company has opted for the new Yamaha PW-X drive in the €5,499 top-of-the-range 8.0 model. This not only wants to impress with pure riding performance, but also communicate with the smartphone. The new e-mountainbike has a "Keyless Go" function, which is designed to prevent theft. The bike also automatically calls for help in the event of a fall. However, the app was not yet available at the time of testing. It is now available for Apple and AndroidDownload devices for free.
Haibike is also breaking new ground when it comes to hardware: the SDuro comes with the Magura Boltron upside-down suspension fork. Its inner workings originate from children's motocross. Alpine bikers will be delighted with the double drivetrain and the powerful Magura MT5 brakes. The Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres in Plus format with Trailstar compound maintain contact with the ground. The e-bike giant has also updated the frame: the reach has grown and the chainstays have shrunk.
When you set off, you immediately notice the stylish display integrated into the stem. This provides information about the selected assistance and other data such as range, distance or cadence. However, it is somewhat lacking in contrast. The ergonomically imperfect control unit is used to switch between the five modes Eco+, Eco, Standard, Sport and Extra Power. In the latter, a powerful 80 Newton metres are available. Overall, the PW-X pushes powerfully, but also emits a quiet whirring noise. Typical PW-X problem: If a foot rests on the pedal when stationary, the motor pushes and vibrates.
With this powerful unit, you can climb the climbs quickly. However, the short chainstays in combination with the high front limit you on extremely steep sections. The very steep seat angle can only counteract this to a limited extent. On the flat, it ensures a comfortably short riding position. The wide tyres with a soft Trailstar compound provide plenty of traction. The dual drive offers a huge range, which is unnecessary on an E-MTB - as long as the battery still has juice. A solid single drive would make more sense here.
Downhill, we are pleased with the short chainstays (455 millimetres) and the resulting agile handling. The high front end provides a lot of confidence on steep sections. The equipment is impressive: the tyres with Apex protection belts are relatively puncture-proof and the Magura MT5 brakes are reliable. Only the fork cannot keep up with the solid rear triangle: Although it responds well, it offers little compression damping. In addition, the torsional rigidity is far too low: When braking hard, the fork buckles and steering commands are only implemented imprecisely. This is a major problem, as the stanchions get wedged in the stanchions and block the suspension fork.
With the SDuro AllMtn 8.0, the Schweinfurt-based company has a solid e-mountainbike on offer. The Yamaha PW-X provides plenty of power and the riding characteristics are impressive. Only the poor Magura Boltron fork spoils the Haibike's test score.
