Get on, ride off and enjoy - no matter what the day brings. This carefree character is what modern all-mountain bikes aim to deliver. With the new speedsters from Ghost and Stevens, we asked two bikes for all occasions to do battle.

E-mountainbike manufacturers must sometimes feel like they are on a hamster wheel. Much more than with non-motorised bikes, the development and construction of e-MTBs is dependent on the products and specifications of suppliers. Strictly speaking, it is the large drive manufacturers whose product cycles the bike brands are chasing after.

This will be particularly evident in the 2022 model year, as market leader Bosch is shaking up the product world of e-MTB manufacturers with its new Smart system. Bikes that are in the shop with the old system - and pretty much every brand still has models in its portfolio - are all too quickly confronted with the accusation that they are not up to date.

The duel between the brand new Stevens E-Inception AM 8.7.1 GTF and the Ghost E-Riot Trail Pro will therefore also be a clash of Bosch generations. Stevens is at the start with the revised Performance CX with Smart System and huge Powertube 750 battery, while Ghost is relying on the 2021 predecessor with a 625 battery. An unfair comparison? Not at all. For one thing, nothing has changed with the model change in terms of power, power delivery and modulation. Secondly, the question of which solution is better can ultimately only be determined by the overall concept of the bike and its area of use.

Even on his very first tour, he focussed on single trails - and even after more than 30 years in the saddle of an MTB, these are still the quintessence of biking for him. He spent his youth competing in various bike disciplines and later his cycling career was characterised by years as a riding technique coach. Professionally, the experienced test editor now focusses on e-mountainbikes. In recent years, the qualified sports scientist and trained journalist has tested over 300 bikes and more than 40 different motor systems in the laboratory and in practice.
