Focus is closing previous gaps in its mountain bike product range with two new bikes. The new Focus One completes the cross-country range as a 100-millimetre race fully, while the new Focus Jam with 140 millimetres of suspension travel and 27.5-inch tyres enriches the all-mountain category.
The centrepiece of both Focus bikes is the new Fold rear suspension system. The patented design of the supported single pivot divides the suspension travel into two phases. The first 20 per cent up to the sag point ensure sensitive response with degressive kinematics, beyond which the rear suspension becomes progressive to prevent bottoming out towards the end. Each Fold rear triangle has a completely closed rear frame triangle. All bearings, rocker arms and the shock move to the centre of the frame, which reduces the unsprung mass on the rear triangle and places the centre of gravity more centrally in the bike. On the one hand, this promises balanced riding behaviour and, on the other, an optimally functioning suspension and thus an increase in grip.
Another advantage: in contrast to the Sam enduro model, the new rear triangle system creates space for a bottle cage in the frame triangle.
The new Jam comes with a moderate 66.8 degree head angle, 425 millimetre short chainstays and the latest Boost standard. According to Focus, the full carbon frame weighs 2060 grams (without shock). The cheaper aluminium models of the Focus Jam are said to be around 400 grams heavier. There are a total of six models between 2600 and 7000 euros. Exciting: Sram's 1x12 Eagle drivetrain is available from as little as 3700 euros.
When developing the 1830 gram (without shock) lightweight frame, the focus was not only on weight but also on stiffness and the efficiency of the Fold rear triangle. The patented R.A.T. rear axle is held in place by 448 millimetre chainstays. The new Focus One comes in three equipment variants exclusively with a carbon frame and in sizes S, M and L. The highlight: the top model weighs less than nine kilos including the Vario seat post.
