Cube is sending the Stereo 29er into its second season with slight changes: the fact that the rear triangle of the HPC is made of aluminium instead of carbon fibre doesn't do any harm. The bike is even stiffer. Compared to last year (SHPC 3299 euros), there is a telescopic seatpost and lighter wheels. The Pike fork is a good choice, as it saves almost 400 grams compared to the Fox counterpart with top function. Thanks to the low bottom bracket (caution: risk of bottoming out!), the bike is stable on the trail and downhill, and the suspension has reserves. You are happy about the enormous control even at top speed. All the testers (even 178 cm tall) were delighted with how easy it was to ride the Stereo fast. 29er disadvantages? There are none. The steep seat angle makes climbing easier, but the fat tyres roll moderately. The 2014 Stereo is not only cheaper, but also has a more coherent spec. This scores the necessary points for the overall victory.
Conclusion: Very good things made better: In its second season, the Stereo continues to impress with great riding characteristics and a wide range of uses. Buy tip!
PLUS Great, confident handling, very wide range of use, relatively low weight, reasonable price, complete equipment
MINUS Low tyre clearance at the rear, only three-year warranty; only small water bottle possible (for size M)
The alternative
Cube offers alternatives in every direction. More expensive ones with a full carbon frame or cheaper ones, such as the Stereo 140 HPC Pro 29 for 2599 euros with a Shimano SLX/XT groupset and Fox suspension.
