Much quoted, but true: the Cube AMS is the Golf of mountain bikes. Classic design, versatile, probably the best-selling fully ever. With the addition of 150, the AMS plays in the all-mountain class, Cube has pimped up the diamond frame look with powerful suspension travel. Solid aluminium frame, robust equipment, superior geometry - how can you go wrong? Exactly, nothing. You sit sportily enough for long distances (suitable for marathons), switch the platform on the shock uphill and lower the fork to your liking. The wide cockpit allows you to keep an overview even on the nasty downhill sections of the test lap, and the bike is extremely smooth and composed. The only thing missing is the Shadow Plus derailleur, which reduces chain rattling. It's a shame that despite the large frame triangle, only one bottle cage fits.
ConclusionThe classic look of the AMS 150 means you don't realise its enormous power. The bike is a solid bench with an extremely wide range of uses.
PLUS Good cockpit, reliable riding characteristics, sensible, high-quality equipment, triple crankset
MINUS No telescopic support, moderate braking force
The alternative
Carbon instead of aluminium, Rock Shox instead of Fox. The AMS 150 SHPC Race model for 2899 euros offers the same concept with carbon fibre suspension, making the bike 700 grams lighter.
