With the Neuron:On AL, Canyon is launching an attack on the price-performance market. New Bosch motor, robust aluminium frame, removable battery and a fair price: the E-Fully is set to become the new super all-rounder. We have already been able to test the newcomer.

Topics in this article

Newly launched e-mountainbikes often attract attention with their exorbitant prices. Stylised carbon frames, innovative solutions, high-end components. The new Canyon Neuron:On AL deliberately goes in a different direction. The all-mountain bike aims to score points with all-round ability and a fair price.

This fits in well with Canyon's brand essence and creates clarity in the Koblenz-based mail-order company's E-MTB range. Because the predecessor, the Neuron:On CF with carbon chassiswas quite close to the equally sporty carbon e-bikes Neuron:Onfly with Bosch SX motor and the Shimano All-Mountain Spectral:On CF. The newcomer now stands out much more clearly, if only because of the frame material and the starting price of 3799 euros.

With the Neuron:On AL, Canyon wants to appeal to the widest possible target group. Comfort cyclists should get their money's worth just as much as touring bikers and trail fans. Compared to its predecessor, the suspension travel has been increased slightly. The geometry has also been redesigned. The classic battery removal should also increase the number of potential buyers. And the same applies to the popular Bosch motor.

New motor, new batteries, new concept

Incidentally, the Neuron:On AL is the first E-Fully from Canyon to hit the trails with the latest generation of the Bosch Performance CX. After the presentation of the revised motor in autumn 2024, the Canyon E-MTB fleet remained quiet for the time being. The potent race enduro Strive:On continues to run with the predecessor of the Performance CX. The touring and trail all-rounder Neuron:On is the first to receive the long-awaited update.

Of course, the new motor also comes with new batteries. Either the Powertube 600 or Powertube 800 fit into the down tube, both of which are significantly lighter than the previous batteries. The batteries can also be easily and quickly removed from the bike, whereas the carbon chassis of the Neuron:On CF was designed for a permanently installed battery.

In terms of controls, the Neuron:On relies on the combination of an LED remote on the handlebars and a Kiox display in the centre in front of the stem. This provides the rider with a lot of information that is easy to read, including the navigation function. As an option, the range can be increased by 250 watt hours using the additional Power More 250 battery. This range extender fits compactly on the down tube and provides a total of up to 1050 watt hours on the bike.

Frame and geometry of the Canyon Neuron:On AL

The chassis was completely redeveloped for the new edition of the price-conscious classic. In terms of geometry, chassis and design, however, it is based on its predecessor, the Neuron:On CF. The frame material, aluminium instead of carbon, enables a significantly lower price level. Whereas the carbon bike cost between 4999 and 6999 euros, the successor with an aluminium chassis costs between 3799 and 5499 euros.

Of course, the frame material also has an impact on the weight. The top model weighs 24.9 kilos in size L with an 800 battery. In addition to the material, the removable battery also increases the weight, and the equipment is more robust and less weight-optimised.

The geometry is designed to make the bike a universal tool. Pleasure riders should benefit from increased comfort and at the same time trail fans should gain more riding confidence. To achieve this, the chainstays are quite long and the front end is high. The increased suspension travel should also benefit both comfort and off-road expertise. Our ride report below reveals whether this works!

On the trail: how the new Canyon Neuron:On AL rides

We've already had the opportunity to test the new Canyon Neuron:On AL 9, the top model shown in the pictures, extensively off-road and on tour. Forest tracks and flowing trails were just as much a part of it as more demanding enduro trails.

Striking: the high level of riding comfort. The riding position is very balanced. Neither extremely front-wheel orientated nor rear-heavy. Thanks to the high front, you sit very comfortably even on long rides. The rear suspension works sensitively and ensures good traction.

The bike's relaxed climbing behaviour is also remarkable. With its long chainstays and central position, the front wheel hardly climbs even on steep stretches. This means that the bike is easy to control even in extreme situations.

The solid character of the Neuron:On AL doesn't initially give the impression that it's designed for rough trails. But we were surprised off-road. The super balanced and well-integrated riding position immediately conveys a lot of confidence. You cruise relaxed over obstacles and flow through bends and over waves.

The suspension works with a pleasant mix of sensitive absorption and good support. The rear suspension releases its travel willingly, but doesn't bob unpleasantly. This means you don't have to take extreme high-speed descents to utilise the suspension travel.

With its long chainstays and slightly higher weight, the Neuron is not the ultimate playmobile. Nevertheless, it is by no means sluggish on flat and moderate trails. The counter-pressure in the rear suspension keeps the bike and rider in position, even when the rider is actively pushing and spurring the Neuron on. This makes the bike really fun to ride, even on sporty trails.

Enduro-style stunts? The Neuron:On can do that. But here you realise that it is not necessarily designed for this.Photo: Max FuchsEnduro-style stunts? The Neuron:On can do that. But here you realise that it is not necessarily designed for this.

If the terrain becomes more extreme, the riding safety remains high. But in rough terrain, you notice the tame equipment, even on the top model. Both the inexpensive Lyrik fork and the cheap DB8 brakes naturally do not perform at Enduro level. And the linear rear suspension also reaches its limits on extreme hits.

If you're really after rough trail action, the Spectral:On or Strive:On are more potent E-MTBs in the Canyon portfolio. On moderate terrain, however, you'll love the particularly uncomplicated and good-natured handling of the new Neuron:On AL.

The BIKE conclusion

If you're looking for record weights or innovative fireworks, the Canyon Neuron:On AL is not for you. Instead, the new aluminium e-bike impresses with an extremely good price-performance ratio, great range and balanced riding characteristics. If you're looking for a universal e-mountainbike at a fair price that also performs extremely well off-road, this is the bike for you! - Florentin Vesenbeckh, BIKE test editor
