Canyon is going its own way with its first 29er: the geometry, gearing and riding position are all geared towards touring.

With Canyon, one of the last major manufacturers is now also jumping on the 29er bandwagon. With its special geometry (74 degree seat angle, 70 degree head angle), the unconventional gear ratio (36/22, 11-36) and the 690 millimetre wide handlebars, the Grand Canyon AL 9.9 is aimed primarily at touring bikers. Three aluminium models between 1500 and 2200 euros, weighing between 10.5 and approx. 11.5 kilos, will be available from the turn of the year. During the first test lap, the Canyon proved to be extremely climbing-friendly and agile. The stiff wheels, supplied by DT Swiss, have 32 spokes and thru-axles at the front and rear. Thanks to the short head tube, you also get a lot of pressure on the front wheel on climbs.

ConclusionThe Koblenz-based company succeeds with the manoeuvrable, easy-climbing aluminium 29ers, the premiere with the large wheels.
