The revised Trailfox from Swiss manufacturer BMC was the surprise of this test - everything simply fits. A modular system on the website allows you to customise basic models, and the setup of the test bike supplied hits the mark. BMC has opted for a clear line with Easton components and a Shimano XT groupset. The hydroformed aluminium frame looks exciting with its camouflage-matt look, for 2011 it offers more travel, a slacker head angle, a butted head tube and an X12 thru-axle. The VPP suspension works very well and is also sensitive on the climbs, although the small chainring registers an out-of-round pedalling feel and pedal kickback, which becomes even more noticeable when pedalling out of the saddle. The shock platform helps. Among the all-mountain bikes in this test group, the Trailfox is one of the sportier, even marathon-compatible models. The suspension provides feedback about the ground, you don't drown in suspension travel. Downhill, the slack steering angle and long wheelbase ensure stability, while the comparatively moderate stiffness is only noticeable in totally rough terrain. The short warranty (three years) costs points. Attention: Frame size L is large!
Conclusion: harmonious from A to Z. BMC's Trailfox is a very good all-mountain bike with a wide range of uses. It is also relatively light.
