The BMC with the disdainful name SH01 presented itself as a real softie. The shiny mother-of-pearl paint and the copper-gold-coloured decor were immediately well received by the testers. The handlebar, stem, saddle and seat post combination harmoniously round off the overall visual impression.
As soon as we got on the bike, the BMC was immediately recognised as having high sofa status - no other bike was more relaxed for women. The rear worked unobtrusively but effectively over roots and rocks. The 2.25-inch Rocket Ron tyres roll extremely smoothly. The combination of the powerful Avid brakes with 185 mm discs and the tyres was perceived by the girls as toxic - loss of traction when braking.
On the descent, we had to be vigilant and put an end to the cosiness: although the suspension was praised throughout for its ride comfort, the bike reacted a little bitchily in tight passages and tended to understeer. The thick, soft grips were felt to be too much of a good thing, diluting the direct riding impression somewhat.
ConclusionA feel-good bike, ideal for long but moderate tours.
