Bigger is better - with this conclusion, BMC ends the wheel size debate. From 2014, the Swiss brand will only have 29-inch mountain bikes in its programme. This means that even the most versatile BMC model will be put on bigger feet in the future. With the new TF01, the Swiss want to offer a thoroughbred mountain bike that uncompromisingly covers the XC, AM and Enduro application areas. In order not to lose agility and manoeuvrability with the large wheels, the Grenchen-based company opted for short chainstays, a low cockpit and a very short 55 mm stem in combination with a long reach during development.
29er wheels, long suspension travel and short chainstays pose a particular challenge for the frame design. The seat tube has been moved to the front and the front derailleur is attached to the rear triangle with a removable mount.
The APS suspension system, already familiar from its predecessor, promises sensitive function and high drive neutrality. The deep-drawn top tube offers plenty of legroom and makes it impossible for the top tube to be damaged by the handlebar fittings in the event of a fall.
For all frame sizes, there is enough space in the frame triangle to mount a shock with reservoir and a water bottle cage. An in-house chain guide is fitted to the non-XX1 models. The frame also has an ISCG mount. The internally routed cables round off the high-quality look. At 2490g, the frame weight is slightly (40g) lighter than its 26-inch predecessor.
During the first ride test, the new TF01 climbed efficiently and without negative drive influences. On the trail, you quickly forget that you're riding a 29er. The handling is balanced, playful and agile. Even at high speeds or on technical passages, the TF01 remains composed and offers the rider plenty of reserves. The rear suspension is pleasantly linear.
The TF01 is available in two versions. The top model TF01 Team Red XTR is equipped with Shimano XTR and carbon wheels and weighs 12.2 kg. The TF01 Lime XX1 Trailcrew is the more progressive version with Sram XX1, aluminium rims and Fox Float X shock.
In addition to the carbon TF01, BMC also offers the cheaper versions TF02 with an aluminium rear triangle and the TF03 with an all-aluminium frame.
The prices range from 2999 euros to a confident 8999 euros for the TF01 top model.
