With a total weight of just 14.3 kilos, the Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Comp is the lightest bike in this comparison. The Americans achieved this primarily due to the lightweight frame. In terms of equipment, the bike is one of the lightest bikes on the market together with the competition from Scott Genius and Marin Rift Zone is one of the weaker candidates. The gears on the "Stumpi" are changed via Sram's simple GX groupset. The aluminium cockpit is manufactured in-house. The suspension comes from Fox - but only from the affordable Rhythm line. On the other hand, the Specialized Stumpjumper rolls on very solid tyres. The grip and rolling behaviour of the in-house rubber are equally impressive.
Uphill, the rear suspension on the Specialized Stumpjumper Evo is really very drive-neutral, which in combination with the low weight generates first-class propulsion. As a result, the bike is only beaten by the Scott in the uphill rankings. Downhill, the Specialized impresses with its plush and high-traction rear suspension. The mix of comfort and support is perfect. Coupled with the slack head angle and the very low bottom bracket, the candidate literally sticks to the ground and generates a smooth ride en masse. All the testers also liked the riding position. You are low behind the cockpit and nicely centred on the bike. This makes it intuitive to steer through the terrain.
The simple Rhythm suspension fork does a decent job of parrying hard hits, but the Fox forks with Grip2 cartridges on YT Jeffsy, Radon Slide and Cube Stereo however, can be customised much better to the driver's riding style. Finally, there is praise for the service friendliness. The Stumpjumper is the only bike in our all-mountain bike test to get the green light.
The Specialized Stumpjumper Evo Comp embodies the perfect all-mountain bike with its excellent riding characteristics and low weight. However, with its weak spec, it is only good enough for second place in the test. - Jan Timmermann, BIKE Editor
